Serious going
Getting the mileage in is my problem, only doing around 20 miles a week and sometimes less.
I do a local loop midweek at around 6.25 pace, its only 4.3 miles but has 2 serious hills so its a good test.
Trying to get a long run in then at the weekends.
When do you expect a final call will be made on Berlin?
I find getting the time in to do the miles is the problem. Last week I did 40ish km which was my longest running week this year Iād say. Iād normally be around 25kmish, but need to keep between 30-45 up to start of September. Weāve visitors this weekend and Iāve a race the following weekend anyway, so Iāll be keeping it to about 2 x 10km this week.
@Wexford1996 I was chatting with a really top ultra runner last night. He said most people he sees on Strava are going way too hard in training.
He says theyād have āeasy runā up on their description but their HR would be in 150s. He said that is way too high for training. I found myself nodding my head in agreement.
He started in mid 20s and is hitting mid 30s now and hasnāt had a single injury. He said volume (i.e. increasing volume too quickly) and too hard an effort are why he sees people constantly breaking down
Ideally you should be getting out at least 3/4 times per week but you obviously have serious ability to be able to do that long run off very little training. What age are you if you donāt mind me asking?
There hasnāt been any updates on Berlin at all recently so it looks like itās going ahead. Iāll hold off booking flights for another few weeks though. Thereās only one week between it and Belfast so it makes very little difference in terms of training. Thereās 4 other guys from club entered in Belfast so Iāll train away with them.
That is absolutely flying mate. 7.30 per mile is a brutal pace. Makes me feel sick thinking of it.
Iād agree with that. Iāve been running since 2012 and have had very few injuries apart from a few minor knee niggles and thatās because I donāt do any core work or stretching. I donāt use heart rate monitor but if Iām just out for a jog on my own my pace would be in around 5 mins per km. I was almost 30 mins for a 5k jog yesterday because my legs were tired after the weekend.
Some of the guys I train with would rarely have a km over 5 minutes so I donāt think theyāre getting proper recovery. I donāt do massive mileage compared to some. Generally 30-40 miles per week but would probably be close to 60 some weeks when marathon training.
Thatās exactly what @fenwaypark has consistently said on here, and @Wexford1996 too. Great advisers and confidantes for folk of all ages/standards/backgrounds.
Right. I need to complete a 26k (900m climbing) off road hill run in 8 (eight weeks). Iāve put myself down to finish in about 3:30. I havenāt done much hill running, but have tipped along doing 10k twice a week. That said, I reckon Iām sightly fitter than when I ran derroura twice (30k 600m climbing)
Should I be starting to panic?
Itās not too late to get the training done but youāve left yourself a mountain to climb.
Im in for Berlin aswell. I have zero motivation at the moment but am plugging away at the training, I am looking for sub 3:30 which I can do handy enough as I donāt have the desire to train hard, long runs are ran at 8;30 ish pace, I have two hard sessions on Tuesday and Thursday every week and the rest is handy stuff with Long run on Sunday
Whatās a hard session mate?
Iāll do 7 miles tonight with 5 mile intervals at 6:30ish off 400m recovery
Iāll be 41 in September.
Yeah Iām conscious that 20m per week is not really enough so Iāll just have to make the time over the next 2.5 months.
Build it all up gradually. Three to four weeks out be able to do a 20/21kmish hill run with about 700m climb. Thatāll more than have you sorted.
Maybe in the weeks leading up to the long training run, get a long hill run in each week, starting around 12km and adding a couple each week.
I aim to be able to do a few low 30s by end of August. Most Iāve don this year is one 22. Will do a 21 next weekend, and then build up from there for the followong month
thats only a long half marathon, you should be well under 3 hours, youād be fit from the cycling?
Iāll aim for that. Hills are a drive, which is a pain in the liathroidi
āyou can always walk the hillsā as I was was told from day one
Anything local that feels like a hill? Maybe some hill reps. Hard on the up, easy on the down. But get a few sessions on the real thing
Youāll get through it no bother Iād say. Iām not a strong hill runner but try get up the hills a few times between now and them. Just walk the uphills and recover on the downhills if youāre struggling.
