Vindication for Dublin backers and Ger Brennan backers.
Unbelievable display by Cian O’Sullivan - one of the best I’ve seen in the flesh.
Did I predict a goalkeeping clanger too?
That’s 49/52 in GAA championship for me this season.
O’Sullivan put it two fantastic defensive performances in the second half of his last two games. He was super in midfield too.
Who’s player and young player of the year after that? Probably brogan for the main one but he’d only two good games really. All 3 dub contenders for young player went off early doors. Cillian O’Connor could get it again
His defensive work, both when he was in midfield and when he went back on Andy Moran, was fucking awesome. Some of the covering, dispossessions and general workrate to even get near the play was phenomenal.
O’Sullivan is one of the best players on the Dublin panel. Unfortunately he when he first broke onto the panel he was hampered by injuries. Now he is really showing what he can do. I expect him to be Dublin’s centre back if we can unearth another midfielder to compliment Macauley.
He was at nothing whatsoever today but two hat tricks in earlier games including one against the all Ireland champions certainly have him in contention for it. Kilkenny mannion and mccaffrey have been inconsistent at best too. O’Connor is not the ‘marquee’ forward mayo are crying out for at the moment though.
Mayo expended too much energy too early. They were certainly dragging their feet by 45/50 mark.
Got a hint of them being over trained to be honest. All the brain farting would tie in with this.
Credit Dublin with pressure for some of it, but a lot of it was just dreadful decision making.
They have mental issues clearly, but they’ll win fuck all of note with Vaughan at center back (or not at center back as the case may be. )
They made an awful lot of unforced handling errors too. In fairness Dublin are a huge physical challenge for any team. It’s inevitable that the opposition start to wear down eventually.
What Cluxton was doing was being part of a team tactic. his actual kicking skills were unbelievably basic today, anyone could have did what he did. It was excellent team tactics in isolating a portion of the field, and as you said, getting a man to run into space. But all Cluxton had to do was hit it into about 20m of space for a player to run onto. there was nothing at all spectacular about his kicking today at all.
When I think of Cluxton making good kicks, I think of a few years back when he was pinging them onto the chest of the likes of Wheelo or Ryan. what he is doing now is the product of a good team tactic and there is damn all kicking skill required.
game today was shite enough. hinged on a few things IMO.
Dublins ability to get 2 goals against the run of play.
Mayo making some strange changes, Seamie O Shea, Freeman and the moving of Higgins back ot mark O Gara
An utter shite performance from McQuillan who in my biased opinion was horrible on Mayo. 4 minutes of injury time? and I’d love to see how much play happened in that time. the last 5 minutes prove the black card will solve nothing.
I’d give Flynn man of the match too. thought he was excellent firstly in keeping Vaughan quiet, but in general play too he was a good link in the middle sector and scored well too.
he was being bet up a stick off the ball. every time he tried move he was being held, pulled, blocked, whatever they had to do to stop him attacking it was done.
to be honest, I thought both sides seemed to run out of steam. there were players who made runs up, and when the ball was turned over, they couldnt muster up enough energy to start going back defending. The Mayo forwards werent too bad, but they started a ridiculous tactic (which ultimately gave them a goal though) of lumping in high aimless ball. It was as if they couldnt run anymore or carry the ball, so they just kicked it long and high, and for the majority of the time, got nothing out of it.
Thought lee Keegan kicking the ball into the keepers hands in the second half was a big turning point too. Think it would have put just one in it at a crucial time. He’s a class act in general though
