Could it be a backlash from liberals in Apple who took umbrage with Musk banning paedophilia from twitter? Wouldnt be surprising if they would take their business elsewhere under those circumstances.

They didn’t really do the whole free speech thing either. Helped Quell some of Hong Kong protests in 2019 by restricting use of an application used by protesters to arrange and meet. Also limiting use of file drop to Chinese market (started couple of weeks ago) just as unrest and sentiment was building.
