Maybe not a masterstroke but certainly a justification. Reading a lot about this today. A lot of angry Wolves fans and a lot of neutrals wishing Wolves to go down by 3 on goal difference.
I can’t see the problem. They were very unlikely to win, they got a massive 3 points at the weekend and have a huge game this weekend and they fielded players from their first team squad who should all be dying for a chance to impress. If a star man from the “first choice” 11 had gotten they’d be lambasting Mick for not resting him. It’s not Mick’s fault it costs the fans an arm and a leg to go to a match either.
I watched a lot of Wolves Spurs at the weekend, Kevin Doyle had to be practically carried off the field, they ran tehmselves into the ground. I see no problem with McCarthy resting his players last night. There’s no guarantee they’ll get 3 pts v Burnley, but he’s cut his cloth to suit himself, I say good on him.
The co- commentator said if they were picking a player of the year (at this point) Richard Dunne would be on the short list.it has to be the bargain of the century.i mean, 6 million (which is nothing nowadays) for a player of dunnes quality… its stupid. and to go out and pay 20 million for a player not half as good…youd really have to question mark hughes.

Where do ye stand on this?[/quote]
A typical accountant stance from me now - let’s look at cost benefit.
I don’t believe that the throwing away of a possible three points, unlikely maybe but they did beat Spurs away at the weekend, jusitifies giving professional footballers a rest for a midweek game so that they may or may not beat Burnley at the weekend.
McCarthy is an imbecile really, nice guy and all that he claims to be. Man Utd had just lost their last home game and were missing a good few players. Wolves had just won away against a full strength Spurs side. A result at Old Trafford could really have kickstarted Wolves season. If players like Doyle were fucked he could have rested him and brought him on. The game was a chance for the likes of Ebanks Blake to get on the goalsheet, a chance to gain in confidence for the rest of the season. McCarthy though effectively surrendered before the game even though there were 3 points at stake. That defeatist attitude will hopefully get its comeuppance against the might of Burnley at the weekend.
Wolves will not survive in the EPL with such a clown in charge.

Anyone that reckons even a full-strength Wolves would’ve gotten anything from a United side beaten in their last game is a clown, imo. Despite the result against Spurs, Wolves are fairly shit anyway. B’ham beat them at home just a couple of weeks ago for christ’s sake. A bit of common sense is needed here.
Spurs last home game before Wolves they beat Wigan 9-1. The Wolves game looked a home three pointer all the way but Wolves long outsiders claimed an unlikely three points. This proves nothing is ever a given in sport and if your going to give walkovers what was the point in getting promoted?
I guess McCarthy will now start playing reserve sides away against the top sides e.g. Villa, Arsenal, City etc
Birmingham are 6th, they have some very decent players, play decent football and work like fook. McLeish is doing a fine job there. Wouldn’t draw them into this argument.
Mbb- KIB shouldn’t be saying things like that, but in fairness they are one of the top sides…this season.

Birmingham are 6th. United are 2nd with the game being played at Old Trafford on a Tuesday night after a huge performance on the Saturday. Spurs weren’t good last weekend. Of course though by KiB’s reasoning Wolves could now beat Wigan 10-1.
IMO it was the right decision by Mick, but only time will tell.

Norwich topped the Premier league for a run before Christmas once.
Newcastle dominated for a season or two there for a while without winning.
Leeds even had a couple of years of being in the top 4 or so, won the last title before the epl began.
It didnt make any of them the top sides in the epl. Only a deluded supporter would believe Villa or City to be one of the top sides. There’s 4, and there’s no else. Until that 4 get broken over the length of a season consistently (which was how Chelsea broke into it), the sides named by KIB, Arsenal exculded, are also rans.

I think he did the right thing as well, busy christmas coming up, already one win more than expected out of the lastr 2 games. Smaller clubs need to pick games to go after. All their home and everyone around them away.

I said this season, which is up to now. they are 3rd, thats good enough for me…so far.

I don’t like it for a few reasons.
Resting players on a Tuesday for a game the following Sunday seems unnecessary. Five days should be ample rest time for a professional footballer.
There must be a chance that it will cause some disquiet with the first team. They can’t be happy at missing out on one of the biggest games of their season, especially when they’re on good form.
There is always a chance of getting something out of every game. This sends out a defeatist signal to the rest of the league, but more importantly to their own players. They must be thinking that even their manager doesn’t think they’re good enough to get a result at Old Trafford.
I believe that Wolves have an obligation to the integrity of a league that is giving them a lot of money.
