Epl 2011/2012

What a horrific lack of vision from Lennon there. How did he not just roll that back?

If ever one piece of play summed up a player it was Aaron Lennon there. All the pace in the world but fuck all awareness and an absolutely dire decision to ignore the cut back.

Well finished by Wellbeck. Spurs had done well until then but hard to see them having the confidence to go on and equalise.

This is a desperate game.

Canā€™t wait until the real football starts next week.

Wellbeck :o

de Gea does not inspire confidence in EPL football yet.

Nobody spots a gap quite like Giggs.

I am genuinely looking forward to seeing de Gea perform on a wet night in Stoke.

Very comfortable for Utd in the finish, hadnā€™t been impressed by Welbeck until he scored; thereafter he was inspired. Donā€™t see him keeping Hernandez out of the team long term though. Thought centre of midfield was average for Utd, both Anderson and Cleverly came alive after the goal but struggled to dominate before that. Smalling looks excellent, very comfortable on the ball and well able to get down the wing. Rooney and Young looked the pick of Utdā€™s players tonight. Have been impressed with Young, more variation to his game than was apparent at Villa.

Spurs were dire though, offered nothing up front. Really missed Modric tonight, passing from midfield was awful. Whatever happened to Jenas, surely a better option than Kranjcar in the middle?

Spurs really just did shoot on sight trying to test De Gea rather than play an extra pass or take the extra touch and find a better chance to score from. United started off well but from the middle of the 1st half till United scored it was fairly even. Welbeck showed tonight what he is able to do tonight. Jones looked excellent on the ball. Has great tackling ability and isnt afraid to run at teams and had a great run in the 2nd half that nearly lead to something. Anderson came into the game more as the game went on. Ferguson has to keep faith with him and hopefully starting the first 2 league games will bring him on even more. Nani was fairly quiet tonight. Young put in a decent shift. Final ball wasnt as good as it should have been. Hopefully United will make it 3 out of 3 Sunday.

Excellent second half performance. Agreed with Shan on Anderson, he is our best hope for the season at midfield. I donā€™t think that augurs particularly well for the year, but the responsibility has to be put on to him and see how he responds. He did well second half tonight anyway. Was very impressed with Smalling, with three of the back four indeed. Evans unfortunately made his customary mistakes and rash challenges. Cleverley and Welbeck in particular were excellent second half, Young in the first. Rooney was very good throughout I thought, at the heart of everything, holding the ball up well and coming deeper for it when necessary.

De Gea hopefully should take a bit of confidence from the night. I still think he needs to bulk up a bit to become more of a physically imposing presence. I thought that was shown up on the cross that he flapped at near the end, he didnā€™t seem to attack the ball with great confidence with a couple of people around him. Heā€™s only 20 though, so he should definitely become a bit physically stronger over the next few years.

I should probably temper the generally optimistic tone of my previous post by pointing out that we were a bit overrun in midfield in the first half and if Spurs had any kind of decent creative force (i.e. Modric) then some damage could have been done. I was surprised at how little reigning PFA Player of the Year Bale did actually. Not sure how much of Untiedā€™s second half dominance was down to Spurs tiring as opposed to Unitedā€™s excellence either.

Shan iā€™d be interested in how you rated Cleverleys performance tonight and if you feel he is good enough to nail down that position?

you must have some life.

Agreed. What a goon.

The Guardian today described Friedelā€™s performance as a ā€œmaster class.ā€ Did I miss something in my viewing?

He made some showy saves but nothing you wouldnt have expected him to get to. The English media love a golden oldie.

weā€™ll really see what heā€™s made of on a wet night in Stoke, thats the acid test.

I will say about MUFC last night that while I agree with Totti The Count and Bandages cuntish assessment of Jones he is an impressive player for what, 19 yrs of age? Ferguson will have an interesting time shuffling around them all when fit.

Should be an interesting title race in Manchester this season.

United play Stoke on a Saturday in a 5.30 ko in September. I dont think the wet Tuesday night acid test will apply for De Gea in this one. United have won 6 out of 6 since Stoke got back in the Pl so know how to beat them.

Dunph regarding Cleverley. He started off well but got crowded out of the midfield by Kranjar and Livermore. He came back into after playing the great cross in for Welbeck to score. He done enough to keep his place for Arsenal on Sunday. He will have to do better than last night to keep it long term with the likes of Fletcher waiting to come back in. Michael Carrick signs a new deal and then within months is shunned to the bench for 2 weeks in a row and didnt get on. Poor lad. Barca really did a number on him twice.
