European Super League Super Thread

Possibly, but America is running this show. They hate the Russians after all the rocky type films and know their power and money could be fucked with at anytime there.
Having said that, if the founding clubs decide they can sell permanent places in the league for a billion dollars or so I’d say there will be a queue of countries wanting a franchise.

I’ve stated for a long time now that it’s become more akin to pantomime than anything else …

I don’t think them 2 matters are comparable at all. For a start, in gaelic football a kids county is determined at birth, players move freely between clubs in soccer. A kid in Birmingham is not going to stop dreaming of being a footballer because there is no Super League club in his city, nor is any kid in Cork or Belfast.
The reality is that for all these kids the Premier League gives them absolutely nothing in terms of resources of facilities, it is simply something for them to watch. If the format changes it will not impact them whatsoever.
And club football is a closed shop as it is, the only hope of success for smaller clubs is if some obscenely wealthy individual or state takes them over. Seems to be a lot of hysteria about something which is just a natural progression for the sport. If it is stopped now it will simply start up elsewhere in the globe within the next 20 years, whether that be America or Asia. And for everyone at grassroots level, which is where football really matters, things will continue as it always has done.

Multi-national leagues are a difficult sell because they do away with traditional rivalries. The Pro14 in rugby has turned into a crock. Irish rugby fans don’t care about Leinster or Munster playing the Ospreys or Glasgow. There’s no relationship there and there’s no rivalry there. Nobody outside Ireland buys into the league.

The Heineken Cup is a different ball game because the games are rarer and have novelty.

Liverpool’s biggest rivals are Everton. This plan puts an end to the derby. Leeds, Villa, Newcastle, West Ham, Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace, these are all games which are full of history and resonance for Liverpool, more than games against Atletico Madrid or Inter Milan.

Martin Lipton was good on otb this morning. Said City are the only waivering of the six but it’s not for moralistic reasons and doesn’t think it will come to anything. Also said the epl need a 3/4 majority to throw the clubs out which they don’t have.
FIFA don’t want stars missing Qatar so they’ll bring uefa to heel

They’re being hung out to dry & are beginning to get cold feet. They’re nervous & disappointed about way it’s been handled. “This is not what we signed up for”

-Said the Officers at Auschwitz

After all the bribery and corruption, there isnt a hope the top stars dont go to Qatar.

That didn’t take long.

Kids start playing because they have heroes and if you’ve no local heroes, less kids will start playing. And if everything outside of the Super League becomes downgraded, that means clubs folding, less money, less prominence for football as a cultural, social or playing activity. A trickle down effect of decline.

“Hysteria” is not an argument. This is not a “natural progression”, it’s a destruction of the entire football system.

I have no idea what you’re on about as regards “it will start up in America or Asia” in the next 20 years.

The US already has MLS. If it becomes popular worldwide that will be its own organic success, it will not be a breakaway league. Asia is entitled to run its own football as it sees fit, but it cannot set up its own Liverpool FC or its own Manchester United FC playing out of Mumbai.

I find it hard to believe any of them half heartedly got involved here and didn’t think there’d be a backlash, or that a few others went a pulled the trigger without their consent or knowledge. They’re all in this equally.

If the 6 clubs carry on in the PL then nothing much changes. It’s just a slightly shitter version of the CL.

It gets slightly ridiculous whenever Tottenham keep qualifying despite finishing mid-table in the PL for a few seasons in a row. Eventually fans lose interest and it reforms with UEFA somehow - maybe with a permanent European 2nd tier. Arsenal don’t move to Shanghai.

This is a big fuss over nothing.

Any footballer barred from going to Qatar will make a virtue of it

I love the way the shills are hanging this sort of thing up as if it’s a threat. If John Henry moved Liverpool to Boston, I’d see it as a grand thing. A new fan owned LFC would simply spring up immediately and be back in the Premier League in jig time, with the same worldwide support, precisely none of which would transfer allegiance to Boston.

If this goes ahead and it is a big if - there will be no “moving clubs” . The real money will be from television.

That’s it - the founding clubs geta share of 40% of revenue to themselves - they then get a share of another clatter of money that they share with the 15/20 — they wont need 50/60k fans at stadiums. It will be ultra sanitized.

You could have stopped there
