Worrying precedent for Liverpool fans though ahead of the European Cup final in Kiev. Last time we had this pairing in the FA Cup final in 2007, Liverpool lost the European Cup final 4 days later. Liverpool were doomed before they ever began in Athens in 2007 though as Milan do not lose European Cup finals in Athens when it’s Chelsea v Man U in the FA Cup final.

I wouldn’t be too worried - the blues of Everton proved victorious over Watford on May 19th, 1984 and we won the European Cup final 11 days later.

And the last time Chelsea won the FA Cup when the dates fell the same way as they do in 2018, a Premier League team won the European Cup and Liverpool FC won a major trophy.

For all his flaws Smalling is a decent defender, isn’t rash, uses the ball reasonably well and scores the odd goal. The exact opposite of Jones.
