FAO of Bandage (and other Wexicans)

Will be paying my first visit for the hurling qualifier, and have decided to make a weekend of it. Recommendations for decent drinking establishments? I’d love to say I was looking for recommendations for other things to see/do, but that’s just not going to happen.

Hi Braz. Are you staying in Wexford town for 2 nights? I had a PM on the old platform where I provided either @TreatyStones or @The Runt with the low down on Wexford town pubs for a stag. I wonder if one of the above mentioned posters still has it?

Yeah, a couple of us staying Friday and Saturday. We’ll basically be on the beer from Friday evening.

Yourself and the partner is it Braz?

@Mac bumped the thread where I mentioned a few decent pubs but the PM outlined a pub crawl option. I’ll get to compile something in the next day or two though. Are you staying in a hotel or what?

Drinking partner in the noblest tradition Fagan.

Cheers Bandage, much appreciated. Four or five decent boozers, best place to go pre-game, late bar/club would be great.

Staying in a B&B (or Guest House as it is styled).

Wexford Park is in a residential area near St Peter’s College secondary school and Clonard Church and there’s NO decent pubs nearby.

Your best bet is to drink “down town” and make the 15-minute stroll up Summerhill to the park.

The good pubs are mainly on the Main Street or in the little side streets off them that lead to the quay front.

The Main Street is split between South and North with The Bullring in the middle with its Pikeman statue.

I like The Sky & The Ground at the very south end quite a lot. Nice pub. The Ground is a regular pub and The Sky upstairs serves world beers and craft beer. @Appendage made a show of himself and puked his ring up here at Christmas 2013 after drinking 8% Belgian lager. A local type vibe more than a place to hit on young wans.

Walk up the town a bit, go into The Premier chipper for 2 rissoles (1 batter and 1 breadcrumb) and then stop at Simon’s Place - a good local too. Run by the late Simon Lambert’s two sons (including ex Wexford player Nicky) and it’s a decent pint of Guinness type place.

Further up along Macken’s aka The Cape aka The Undertaker at The Bullring is potentially a sit outside and watch the world go by in the middle of the day type place. Could be a good afternoon of match spot if it’s sunny.

As you move into North Main Street then The Stores is on Charlotte Street. As far as I know this is THE late bar now in Wexford after the recent demise of Metropolis and Chocolate (neither of which I really went to). Mooney’s on the quay is another late option but I’d avoid that.

One or two side streets on is Monck Street and that’s where I do most of my drinking when home. It’d be common to have a few pints in 1, 2 or 3 of the pubs here before heading to The Stores. There’ll be young wans in these pubs.

I like Maggie Mays as they always show Celtic. Beer garden out the back too. T Morris is run by same chap who owns Stores, beer garden too. Loch and Quay is a nice little pub on that street also.

Only issue in Wexford is Stores stops serving at 2 and clears out shortly after. There’s one casino around the corner on the quay and one back down on South Main Street if you need a late drink.

Head back up onto the Main Street for the 3am fight outside Burger Mac at the end of North Main Street.

  1. Simons Place is predominantly a craft beer bar now. They have their own beer which is brewed underneath the pub.
  2. Is there not a pub close to the Park down the Hill from the part of the ground from where the Town End Terrace entrance meets the covered stand entrance?

Yeah, but I wouldn’t advise heading up from town to drink in Jimmy Browne’s (pub you mention down by Bishopswater) or Culleton’s (beside Kennedy Park national school). Better atmosphere down town and it’s only 15 minutes walk up to the ground.

Imagine there’s an uptown and a downtown in Wexford. It’s like New York.

arguably more pro American sentiment in Wexford than New York.

Speaking of towns named “New”, was there an original Ross.

There is an Old Ross

lads,
is there a decent strip club in the town?

there was/is indeed. Now known as Old Ross, its near the Horse and Hound hotel which is just outside New Ross on the way to Wexford. The ploughing championships a few years ago would have been on around the area of Old Ross. Ross was founded by Strongbow and Dermot McMurroghs daughter Aoife, but was inland a bit and considered a failure. New Ross was founded around the 12th century by William Marshall and Isabella, Strongbows daughter and Diarmuid McMurroughs granddaughter. They were paying their first visit to Ireland when they were caught in a storm, and Marshall vowed to build a monastery if he lived through it. They landed in Bannow bay, and survived, and founded TIntern Abbey just up stream from where they came in at Saltmills in the south of the county. Some consider New Ross to also be a failure…

Cheers @Bandage. Very comprehensive, much appreciated. I’ll try to pack as much of that in as possible, will report back on the elements I can remember.

FAO of @braz83 - Bean and Berry have opened a little mobile coffee shop on the quay front. Outdoor seating etc there too. It’s positively tropical down there when it’s sunny.

I am currently on a Wexford Bus, which is busier than I expected for off college term. Giddiness is slowly building.

Don’t allow the N/M11 upgrade and the probable backup of traffic approaching the Brittas Bay turn off deter or frustrate you.

I’d have given you a lift as far as Gorey had I known braz. The weather on the North Wexford Riviera is stunning this evening. I’ll be departing for Bettyville Park for an evenings racing presently.
