I wouldn’t at all compare NCW and Kilrush. I worked in both areas, and NCW much more civilized. If you go further out from Kilrush, I would suggest (and I don’t mean this in a way to take a pop at the banjo boys) that perhaps because of small populations, there was a fair bit of inbreeding going on generations back. There’s no other way I can explain some of the people out that way.

I’m not sure what the exact reasons are but I would have always felt that there is an awfully dark sort of cruel undertone to the area back there with exceptions around some coastal areas.

North/Mid/East Clare is grand and Shannon has actually improved a bit, there are large areas that are quite decent and some lovely houses on the hill. Sixmilebridge is turning into a complete dive interestingly enough, they got plenty of Limerick exports through regeneration

Doolin is well known for the riptide, not a place you would take kids swimming. The Lisdoon festival drownings was huge at the time, quite the tragedy.

Doughmore is the best beach in West Clare, but that’s a bit of a hike south.
Fanore is your best bet, lovely spot.

8 young lads, 3 brothers from Borris in Carlow among them.

The mother of the 3 Doran brothers that drowned was buried this afternoon. A remarkable lady. She turned 90 last summer. An awful cross to bear for 40 years but she largely just got on with life, with as positive a mindset as you could. 40th anniversary on the August bank holiday weekend.
