Think I’d dip into the Confession Box for a couple.
Has to be on a Saturday night with the hand clapping toe tapping music going
When I lived in Dublin I had a nice routine going. Maybe once a month I’d tip away from work around 2 of a Friday. Luas into town, I was working in Leopardstown, buy the paper and head to a few of my favourite establishments.
Grogans for a pint and a toastie. My favourite thing about Grogans is the lack of a telly, nothing worse than having a quite pint and some cunt pipes up “Can you put on the news/rugby etc” Many a time I’ve necked a pint on hearing the dulcet tones of Sharon Ni Bheolain.
Then traversing Grafton St to Keoghs, not a fan of the place when it’s packed but a nice spot when it’s quite. Off down to The Dame Tavern then, where the racing will be on. Hopefully back a winner or two, but always a good spot for a chat with some randomer or tourist.
Head towards Georges St then to the Long Hall, you might get lucky and nab one of the window seats. Great spot to watch the world go by.
Bit of a stroll to the next stop on my route so I might grab a packet of crisps or some other sustenance, but by the time I reach Devitts there’d be a nice thirst built up again. Not sure if it’d be a popular opinion but I preferred the place pre revamp. Still a great boozer though.
Next stop, depending on the time and if they’re open would be O Connells. Cracking shop with exceptional stout.
Onward then to my old Tipp friend Liam Ryan in The Lower Deck. This would have been one of my two regular haunts so would likely fall into company for a pint or two, chat to the barstaff or sit contentedly at the bar on my own.
Last leg then, for a number of years The Hill in Ranelagh was our local. Unfortunately, this fell to the craft beer fad and became infested with hipster types so we decamped across Mount Pleasant to Corrigans or The MP around 4 or 5 years ago. By the time I reach here the Friday crew would have assembled. Depending on the craic, two or three pints, then up to Louie’s for a cod and chip and the Luas home.
Christ I can’t wait to do that again. I’ve my hotel booked for June, failing that July, failing that August etc.
The Royal Oak in Kilmainham before it became infested with woke hipster types and the arts crowd
It was almost like I was traversing the city going from pub to pub in my mind.
Is that O Connell’s near the Portobello ?? Grand pub that .
Parched
Where’s louies ?
Not quite as epic as Leopold Bloom but a nice pleasant journey nonetheless. Occasionally I might begin on the North side, depending if my pal Robbie was working in The Flowing Tide.
Dublin is a great spot to have a leisurely stroll around.
Ranelagh triangle, think it might be Ranelagh Takeaway or something. Louie is the fella that owns it, Italian lad.
McNeill’s on Capel Street is a noble pub
That was my mention above. A friend of mine lived in an apartment just beside it and it became our regular spot. Great pint and you’d occasionally get a bit of a trad session too.
Was it @Spidey had a memorable post about “barrelling” over and back and around across Dublin on his lunch break one day?
New owners made a cunt of the place. It was a tremendous pub.
That is completely devastating.
It’s in the same family I think; a couple of daughters took it over
I see. Jacksie I think was the aul lad that was the owner when I drank there? A gent.
Yeah and another auld lad from Tipp (Pat , I think.) used to work the bar too. Had been working there for years; I think he left not long after it was taken on by the daughters.
The daughters took over from Dela. Made a dick of it. Got rid of the old staff and now desire to be a hipster gastro effort.
It was like reading Ulysses. edit. you said it yourself.
