I think the Taoiseach/Tanaiste seat must always be filled, by whomever, if the current incumbent isn’t available. Wouldn’t have done to have no one there to hit Bertie a dig when he needed to be woken up.
There was a Brexit debate on Primetime about a week and a half ago with Lisa Chambers and Helen McEntee seated either side of David McCullough.
[Warning: TFK misogyny crew content below]
It was the most harmless affair. Two nervous looking yokes being very tentative and unsure of themselves and one not confident enough to press the other or up the ante at any stage. Both came across as being complete and utter lightweights and being quite unsure of their briefs.
In the long run FF’s Brexit approach will be applauded from a national interest POV, but politically it’s been poor for them. Chambers chirping up at bizarre times with political attacks of such a lightweight nature.
McEntee’s role has been to stand behind Coveney nodding.
Mary-Lou was haranguing Varadkar during leaders questions about the passport status of somebody called deSousa, possibly Emma. Leo told her he’d raised the issue with Maye in Feb and the Secretary of state a month ago and would do so when he meets Bono again.
Mary-Lou said that oul’ plámasing wasn’t worth a shit and he needed to be firm, insist and demand some progress and quit pricking around with it.
Leo told her that was the reason they’d never be in Government here and why they’re outside the gates in Stormont. Politics is about the art of negotiations and diplomacy and not like bould children wanting ice-pops.
Her scowl told she’d been slapped down - viscerally.
Their stance at one stage was to be critical of FG for being too strong in asserting Ireland’s position with the UK government. They wanted them to be mindful that we still need to maintain a close relationship with our near neighbours.
Flanagan was on Newstalk this morning saying how potentially serious the situation was and that they might have to go back and look at previous votes. It was all going well until Coleman asked him if he’d ever done it and he had to admit he “may have done it once or twice but the person he was voting for was in the chamber or only a few seconds away” Coleman basically made the point (and correctly so) that it was black and white and “you either did it or you didnt”
Simon Harris was on the telly last night looking for Dooley and Collins to make detailed statements to the Dáil on Tuesday about their behaviour last week.
This will be swept under the carpet pronto. Every party in the daily is guilty of doing it in some way shape or form. The best that will come out of it is there will be a revised system of voting brought in. Martin has backed himself into a corner though. He was too quick to jettison the two lads. He might find it hard to do a u turn.
To be honest it is a storm in the tea cup . There is no real public outcry . “Political nerds” are engrossed but no one outside of that bubble gives a fuck . That said I would like to see the two FF TDS in hot water .
