Germany’s run of six successive World Cups in which they’ve won their opening game came to an end today.
Brazil are looking to make it 10 opening wins in a row. 1978 was the last time they didn’t win their opening game - and even then they were only denied in highly controversial circumstances when Welsh referee Clive Thomas inexplicably blew the full-time whistle as the ball was in mid-air during a corner from which they scored what should have been the winner against Sweden.
1978 was also the last time Brazil didn’t win their first round group, finishing second to Austria on goal difference.
You have to go back to 1966 for the last time they lost a first round group game, when they were famously beaten at Goodison Park by both Hungary and Portugal.
