Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann

Don’t miss it… it is the best thing ever to happen in a medium to large sized Irish town. Seriously

Ed has since been behind the bar in Mernaghs in Oylegate. He’s some man

Wexford is probably the ultimate Fleadh venue.

A bunch of happy go lucky locals who still genuinely believe its 1996 and a sunny climate to boot.

The narrow streets really lend themselves to an intimate atmosphere too

The key to success of the Fleadh is the Main Street running parallel to the Quay with multiple joining streets.

Multiple centres and places for people to congregate.

@Bandage you’re making a gross miscalculation by not attending.

It’s magnificent.

The weather has been incredible.

Friday will be the biggest drinking day ever in Wexford.

Nice to see a few young drug dealers doing business yesterday on the lane between sharkeys and Anne Street yesterday too.

We spent 20 mins just chilling out on the benches at the side of Simon Lambert’s on Sunday. Glorious local lager and general good vibes. One of the victorious Naomh Eanna team (one of the genuinely nice lads) sat beside us and chatted hurling to our young lads for about 10 mins. They were star struck.

We were about 15 yards from massive crowds yet it felt like we had all the space in the world. Glorious!

Jesus fuck I was there on Monday.

The quay is an ideal location for all the food trucks too.

Bigger than the Saturday? We have training on the Sunday morning at 9 for the second year in a row which will test a few lads.

Let’s train at 9am and keep lads off the beer.

Fuck off.

For fuck sake.

Ah they’re not mutually exclusive to be fair. Most lads will beer and still train the following morning.

Ed Sheeran stopped off in Oylgate and Bunclody on his way home apparently.

Neither a hurling stronghold…

His grandmother used live out near Craanford but she passed away a couple of years ago.

I’ve never seen anything in Wexford like the Saturday night last year, apparently last Sunday was even busier than that.

I’ve taken the decision I want to attend this and Friday is my chosen day. I didn’t attend last year because I wasn’t feeling very well and the Olympics were on and I knew Wexford was the venue again this year. I’m still not feeling very well but I’m feeling the same sort of buzz that I want to do something silly to make myself feel alive as I did when I decided to attend the Ulster final exclusively via public transport. I feel I must attend this event if only as a silent personal tribute to my late uncle who used to come home from Kent every Christmas and never stopped talking about his love of traditional Irish music. I shall be travelling exclusively on public transport.

I’ve never been to a Fleadh Cheoil and I haven’t been to Wexford at all since the day of the 2011 Leinster under-21 hurling final. I’ve never been in a pub in Wexford ever. I don’t really know the lie of the land as regards a Fleadh Cheoil. What time of day should you be arriving at and if, in the unfortunate event you might not be able to secure transport back to Dublin at sensible hours, what is there to do into the single hours until you can get on a bus?

I have identified The Sky And The Ground as a pub I may like to go into.

We really need @Aertel220, @Mac, @Pirlo & @Appendage to provide a rough itinerary/guide here. Maybe a pencil sketch of a pub crawl map. I think you’re possibly looking at a sideways figure of 8, starting at The Sky & The Ground, turning right at Simon’s Place, along the quays, onto Monck Street & the “Crown Quarter”, back along the Main Street to Macken’s/The Undertaker & then back to the quays again & kinda back where you started.

Start at Redmond Square bus or train station, head for North Main St. Walk the length of it stopping along the way. Turn left down near the Talbot onto the Quays. Walk back up Quays eventually turning up to Crown Quarter. Rinse & Repeat nabbing a few take away pints along the way. When you hear decent music, stop and enjoy. Soak up atmosphere along the way. Throw a few bob to the kids playing music and dancing. Only eat in a proper place like Simon Lamberts. Spend a few hours in the Sky & the Ground. Get a Rissole from the Premier. I’m hungry and thirsty thinking about it now.

Lloking to go saturday lads, which i presume will be bedlam.
Where can i park?
What should my general itinerary be for the day?

Park in Farmers Kitchen Park and Ride at the Rosslare side of town.

It will be quietest of the P&Rs.

I hope Sharky’s chipper are cleaning up with all the visitors to the town.

Wexford is one of my favourite drinking spots. A bit out of the town centre but I spent a day drinking in Jim McGees once which was highly entertaining.

Having looked at their reviews it seems they need to literally clean up.

They’ve kept their prices fairly consistent to be fair to them. A steady trade from what I could see the other night.

What buses have you booked? I see the outbound Wexford Bus seems to be booked up until half 7 on Sunday morning. Expressway not showing up any results either.
