It doesn’t mate, not in relation to the amount of money bet per starter or per race. Ireland should have Japanese and HK levels of prize money per race when you look at the sheer amount of money bet.
The avg bet per starter in Ireland is over 300k. By comparison in the US it’s 34k and their average prize money is not much lower. The Japanese have less bet per starter and average purse is almost 70k per race there. In Ireland it’s 27k.
But, hey, if you’re happy enough then fair enough.

That’s very misleading.

Japan and Hong Kong only run elite horses. In Hong Kong it’s something like 90 rated. You will always
get more betting on higher quality racing.

And its only flat breds. Do the same comparison for national hunt and where do we go. Im sure the national hunt is included in the figures he said whereas they really only have flat

Hong Kong also buy the majority of their horses
Off us.

They’ve no breeding industry. Japan have an elite one.

Hong Kong only race twice a week for nine months of the year or something close to that.

It’s apples and oranges.

You’re dead fucking right too about the ratings. Fellas that can’t afford the best breds can own and train a horse here that might never break 70 and still be profitable

And sure the best horses go over from ireland and england

The prize money for dogs and horses in Ireland is fair. I’m saying that as an owner of both animals that are actively being trained

The thing that annoys me is the way people lump all bookmakers together.

Your on course bookmaker has an incredibly tough living.

You can’t lump with in with spoilsports, pp and the rest of the betting corporations.

On course booking making is great. It adds to the unique experience of Irish racing. They are also very fair with taking bets and their payouts.

In longchamp last weekend it’s soulless just randomly handing over cash to a tote type girl and having no idea of your price.

The tote and parimutuel should be banned. Theres an art in putting up a stall

The French are the ultimate awkward squad

If you make money gambling on stocks the stock exchange won’t close your account.

Horse racing seems to be a massive success going by the above posts. Obviously no need for so much tax payer money to prop it up.

Is it not one of those things where the Government investment x amount and then it generates a greater return for the exchequer?

Should they stop funding Failte Ireland because Tourism is going well?

No I don’t think those two are equivalent. Every country on earth spends money on tourism.

if someone is in a pub and horseracing happens to be on the TV in the pub, they include that in their figures (in the report they commissioned),

Out of curiosity over how many meetings?

The government should commercialise all currently illegal drugs. That will generate loads of money for the exchequer and we will get a load of tourists from it. They won’t need to put the millions they stick into animal abuse dressed up as ‘sport’ in order to get money back.
