The father got land off the Land Commission years ago. He later swopped it for land closer to home when the local Demense was split up. 50 acres. There was one small section which slops steeply towards the river with wet bog between the slope and the river.
It was dangerous for animals as over the years a few cattle slipped on the slope and fell into the bog. It was some fuck of a job to get them out and most didnât make it. So the father fenced it off.
Roll on 30 years and the fence is completely overgrown and the old Demense wall has fallen. The land next door is sold and the new owner bulldozed the site and built a house on the fathers land.
The father appealed the planning and was rewarded with a cheque for ÂŁ1 in the post from the neighbours solicitor.
The father has since died and my brother who inherited the farm is unwell. I know not the lye of the land now.
The recent obsession for minutes silences before GAA matches. They used be for major GAA losses, but now any vaguely GAA related death seems to be given the full treatment.
They were taking the mickey altogether in Nowlan Park today calling for a minutes silences for James Nowlan on the 100th anniversary of his death.
