Thatā€™s the spirit. Chin up. It might happen for him next year.

Ooft. Knock out blow.

I donā€™t hate him, mate. Iā€™m glad your happy with his award.

Iā€™m sure heā€™s genuinely gutted just plodding around the country with his All Star and the Liam McCarthy.

Seamie is a good hurler but doesnā€™t have the natural ability that Austin has.

Ah heā€™s a great free taker in fairness.

They hold the hurler of the year award in high esteem in Waterford, theyā€™ve won it three times, more times than theyā€™ve won the All Ireland.

Who was the last non Waterford hurler to win HOTY but not win an All Ireland in the same year?

Christy Ring ( Cork ).

But if weā€™re putting on who won what, then Ross Turnbull has a champions league medal with Chelsea so he must be a better player than Aguero. Thereā€™s a years worth of football/hurling to consider. Wouldnā€™t begrudge either of your lot for winning it but I stand by Keegan being a very good shout considering how he did and who he marked from the quarters on. He even scored a fantastic goal for a team who had no goal in them.

Anyway, all stars are all stars, and like the ballon dā€™or, youā€™d have to wonder how much they matter at all.

Were a lot of them scores not from frees? I do think he was quiet enough up to the final. The final performance was unbelievable but itā€™s a hurler of the year award.

Paudie Maher was the most consistent player in the AI championship this year. Chipped in with some great scores on top of excellent defending.

He was very quiet in the semi final, which was the one occasion where he had to face a real serious full back operator. As an aside, Daithi Burke was the best full back in the country this year and should have been selected at full back.

Hereā€™s my two cents on the poty issue.

Callinan had a quiet year by his standards. His final will go down as one of the all time great final displays. Deserved his nomination but not the award. When pitted up against a real genuine defender (Daithi Burke) he came up short. Cork, Limerick (by virtue of bubbles sending off) and Waterford all employed sweepers that nullified him. It was 15 vs 15 in the semi and final. He only performed in the final. He is the hoty from 2014-2016 if such an award existed.

Gleeson IMO is the most naturally talented of all three nominated but does not have the intelligence, maturity or hurling know how to deserve the award. Do people remember his no show in the Munster final where he was taken off before being sent off? The game vs Wexford where he hit 9 wides. He is the epitomy of the YouTube generation and an individual before a team player.

P Maher deserved it. Consistently a 8/10 in his position all year. He probably has benefitted from playing alongside his brother but there is now a maturity and intelligence in his game.

Gleeson is one of the most talented players Iā€™ve ever seen but he did little enough against Tipp and didnā€™t have to play Galway who were probably the second best team in the country. He did well against Kilkenny but Kilkenny arenā€™t great anymore

Gleason is a showreel hurler, made for the Sunday game highlights. So is Padraig maher. Maher was most deserving of hoty, Gleason next. Then callinan. Poor year for hurling and kK gone means show reel hurlers come to the fore in November when looking back at it all.

Lookit Iā€™m sure Paudie and Seamie are grand chaps. But Austin Gleeson is the Hurler of the Year. Thatā€™s what the record books will show.

Define excellent defending,he is made to look very good when teams resort to launching aimless balls down to him every 2 minutes.IMO Callinan should have got the award but itā€™s gas fellas buy into this Paudie ā€œthe Hammerā€ hyperbole his brother was far more impressive alongside him this year.
