Galway would not have won the AI without Joe.
They wouldnât have won Leinster without Conor Cooney.
Shefflins way over hyped performance in the second half of drawn final of 2012 seems to have got him the HOTY that year. I was at the game, and didnt really think or hear much of his performance being as lauded as it is nowadays. The amount of people that go on about it now is unreal. I watched it back a few years ago and again didnt think a whole lot of it, good but not this world beating feat some would have you believe. http://www.the42.ie/henry-shefflin-kilkenny-galway-2012-2289264-Sep2015/
Just looked up there too, he scored 3-56 that year 0-49 were from frees. So he got 3-7 in 5 games (2-2 against Limerick) from play and player of the year.
Canning got 46 points this year, 10 from play.
The fact that Wexford never wanted Galway in Leinster in the first place made the hammering we gave them in the final very, very sweet. The levels of seething and downright bitterness on show from the Wexford posters this morning over Joe Canning getting a nomination for HOTY is gas all the same. Fair play to @anon70480284, @Fagan_ODowd and @GeoffreyBoycott - their team was beaten by a nose, and their comments above show how gracious they are in defeat.
barron clearly deserves it but those 30 minutes in the immediate aftermath of the AI final will get Canning over the line.
hey, @bandage does not speak for all of us you know. I hope Canning gets HOTY. Bandage asked above if anyone got a HOTY for tapping over frees when the greatest hurler of all time was given one with arguably less input than Canning this year but has been heralded from all and sundry for one of the greatest performances ever.
Canning touched the ball 7 times in the All Ireland Final from open play.
Donât think he touched it at all in the last 20 minutes.
Hit a good lineball up the Cusack Stand side as the final whistle went though.
The thing about Canning taking frees is that he doesnât miss from inside one hundred yards minimum. That really restricts how the opposition plays and cuts down on the ability to stop defenders coming out with the ball. Youâre not talking about a fellow tapping over 21s here youâre talking about a fella who repeatedly puts over frees from inside his own sixty five. Itâs a remarkable talent and a great lift for his team.
Another point I failed to mention above was that sideline balls were part of the 0-36 from placed balls he scored this year (I htinkmaybe 3 times this year?). Another string to his bow.
If James McCarthy wins the football one, I think he is winning it for his contribution over the last six years rather than this year in isolation.
Andy Moran is the man.
If you think Joe Canning had a better year than Barron youâre blind
Itâs the âHurler Of The Yearâ award, not the âBest Hurler On The Winning Teamâ award.
There are at least six Galway players more deserving of a nomination for Player Of The Year than Canning.
Podrick Mannion
Gearoid McInerney
Johnny Coen
David Burke
Conor Whelan
Conor Cooney
As it is, Canning should be a distant third on the named shortlist.
Supermacs Guy is the Gooch of Hurling. A media darling who is not allowed in the lens of criticism.
Conor whelan was galways best player over the course of the season.
Noelie Connors had him in his pocket in the final, in fairness.
And finals count at least double in these things.
Itâs gas reading the usual lads trying to pivot from Canning not being needed to have all that impressive a year due to a greater supporting cast and happily acting as a decoy to Canning was absolutely outstanding and a clearly deserved HOTY.
Cannings performance this year was as much about what he didnât do as what he did
Stop. Youâll confuse them completely.
