Paddy Andrews blew his All-Star nomination in the final.
Based on the arguments being made here for Joe Canning, I think a very fair argument can made that both Dermo and Dean Rock have been unfairly chiselled out of the Footballer Of The Year reckoning.
Based on the list here not being a typo (I havenât checked on more reputable sites) I see there are four Footballer Of The Year nominations, not three.
Something is afoot re Gearoid McInerney.
There were 28 games in this yearâs championship, but essentially now selecting All Stars seems to be done on the basis of dividing up the spoils on the basis of three games. Hard to credit now that John Leahy got a hurling All Star in 1994 in a year in which the only championship action he saw was for the Tipperary footballers.
Players from weaker counties who won All Stars like Mick Bermingham, Pat McLoughney, Pat Critchley and David Kilcoyne, notwithstanding their counties neglible impact in the championship just wouldnât get an All Star today.
Cluxton is more deserving of an all star than David Clarke. Neither of them deserve POTY. Moran should and will win it.
Thats the modern day journalist for you, obsolete mules. And they say the GPA isnât elitistâŚ
Apparently this is so as not to give away the Goalkeeper All Star.
How in the name of fuck did they give Clarke a POTY nomination? Is this what football has become? That of the 4 most outstanding players playing the game, 2 of them are goalkeepers?
Fucking goalkeepers cc @myboyblue
Come on now Geoff, you know well that the backdoor system has created an All-Ireland series in both codes with quarter finals and more competitive semi finals which has concentrated the awards to the teams featured. This is at the expense of a player from a less successful county who had a couple of good seasons with the county winning a league title or perhaps winning a championship game.
1994 was the last year when 6 counties won awards in hurling.
Awards for 5 counties was the usual mark until this decade when it has fallen to 4 counties, these being the semi finalists.
Weâre living in a golden age of goalkeeping talent. Cherish it. Well done to Stephen on getting the nomination in spite of his first half kick out systems failure on Sunday. Is there any way both goalkeepers can be accommodated in the All Star team?
could throw one of them in full back? sure they play the weeper role there really.
+1
In terms of shot stopping, Clarke has it. Cluxton will get it because of the kickouts.
Also Clarke got one last year which will count against him for this year.
Earlier on you were advocating awarding the Hurler Of The Year award on the basis of 20 minutes of one game.
Now youâre lamenting that players from counties which donât make the last four and in most cases the last two are ignored.
Thatâs a huge contradiction.
Ah Cluxton made a great save in the final at a crucial time.
Who said I was lamenting it? I was comparing the current criteria to the criteria in the 70âs, 80âs and 90âs.
Shite finish.
Who said I was lamenting it? I was comparing the current criteria to the criteria in the 70âs, 80âs and 90âs.
The air of lamentation was unmistakable. It was sad and plaintive, like that of Mayo people on Sunday evening.
Ah Cluxton made a great save in the final at a crucial time.
Clarke did similar a minute later.
Clarke had a good year and should get the keeper slot. But POTY? Higgins, Boyle, Parsons, AOS, McLoughlin and Doherty all more deserving from a Mayo standpoint. A bizarre nomination.
No Sean Murphy ffs
Sean wonât even be thinking about this personal slight from the All Star selectors. His twin focus will be on his sheep farm and Ballinkillenâs upcoming Carlow Senior Hurling Championship semi final against Myshall.
