He lived in Waterville, hardly Ballyhale, he was a handy golfer - maybe not a scratch handicap but quite low. Pointing sideline cuts don’t do it for portly Yanks. Micko was plugged into what made tills rattle. As a wise man once said - he was a great man to make a pound and better again at keeping it.
ah yeah no hurling outlet whatsoever in Waterville! Heffo had it in vincents
ironically it was the hurling clubs saved Micko from the sack in 1977, there was a coup against Gerald McKenna county chairman from Ballyduff ( hurling country in North Kerry) the man who appointed Dwyer and staunch backer of Dwyer. It was felt that getting rid of McKenna would lead to Micko being removed also . Tight enough contest but McKenna had the votes of all the hurling clubs in North Kerry and the odd few clubs that dabble in it elsewhere, it was enough to save McKenna his job and subsequently Micko his
I think Micko acknowledges in his book and has a good laugh about the way Kerry hurling clubs secured his survival as football manager at that time
Jack O’Connor has or at least had an awful thing against Micko.
Jack would be gruff enough though.
I’d say Jack thinks the greatest football manager is Jack O’Connor
He wasn’t bragging when he said in his first 3 years in charge, he won 2x All Ireland’s, 2x Munster Championships and 2x NFL’s.
Think he believed the lads from the great teams of the 70’s/80s looked down on him as he never played for Kerry himself …
Think I read somewhere that between schools , under 21 ,minor and senior he’s been involved in 13 all Ireland winning teams as either manger , selector or coach
Jack has great respect for Kerry football and all that has gone before him
You can be 100% sure they did
What’s jacks full medal haul as manager including club schools underage etc. Hefty enough I’d say.
Himself, Mickey Harte and Dessie Farrell are the only managers in either code to win All Ireland’s at Minor, Under 21 and Senior.
Ah yeah he’s won schools and club medals too though I’m sure. Like pep or micko where there’s always the question is their success only down to great players jack is more of a Ferguson at Aberdeen type who’s done it with lower level players too.
It just can’t be a coincidence with these lads.
Dessie doesn’t count
He had to go
So the players said
By God
Davy to return?
Derek and Brick I’d say.
The return of dictionary Derek.
He should have gone while his stock was high
