GAA Managerial Merrygoround Thread

What coaching has Lynch been doing Chewy?

I hope Bandage is happy now that his campaign of vindictiveness and spite has worked on Jason Ryan.

I would love to see someone of his Ilk get the Cork job. Now I have a better chance than him, in fact turenne, Jack Lynch, Christy Ring and mickee also have a better chance of getting it.

He has experience, did very well with limited resources, improve individuals , has a good S&C knowledge and also seems able to delegate.

I have a feeling I’m not going to be happy with who gets the Cork job at all.

Was a development officer in the county for years. Believe he has been involved with a number of club sides as well and is currently training the Ennistymon footballers who are having a very good year under him

Gilroy handed in his cards tonight. Looks like it’s Jim Gavin’s if he wants it but not sure he could fit it in with his work.

Pat Gilroy has stepped down as Dublin boss!!

Let’s hope this is not another gga scandal. I hope it’s just footballing reasons rather than something more sinister if you know what I mean

What do you mean?

He was interviewed for the Offaly job

What the fuck does that mean?

Thanks for the memories Pat. I think it is the right time for him to go and hopefully a new face with fresh ideas and we might be able to kick on win another All Ireland in the next year or 2.

Mickey Whelan’s legend grows

I think this also spells the end of Eoghan O’Gara’s inter county career and possibly Connolly’s as well.

lets pray its for footballing reasons this time

You can think it. You’ll be wrong though.

Yep you’d imagine the likes of Mossy and Casey will go and I’d say Fennell will be gone too. Cullen on thin ice - hasn’t played well in over a year. If Gavin takes over, the u-21s will get their chance and hopefully put pressure on older lads to up the ante.

Can actually see there being a massive bust up with Connolly.

Would agree with you on those players going, Connolly will be big trouble, I think the fact that Gilroy was from the same club kinda kept him in check. I think Fennell will be around the squad, we are a bit short on midfielders but I reckon McConnell might get more starts. I would like to see the new manager give some more of the under 21’s a chance and maybe a couple of the minors who are finishing minor this year being involved in the panel. Paul Brogan will be given the heave ho as well.

Here’s how we stand football wise

Antrim
Position vacant - Liam Bradley stood down after four years with the Saffrons, during which he led them to a first Ulster final appearance in 39-years.

Frontrunners:
Gearoid Adams - assistant manager under Bradley this year, the St John’s man has expressed an interest as long as funding levels are not cut.

Lenny Harbinson - led St Gall’s to All-Ireland club honours in 2010 and is highly respected.

Armagh
Manager in place - Paul Grimley was appointed quickly following the resignation of Paddy O’Rourke and has recently called up Pater McDonnell and Martin McQuillan to his backroom team.

Carlow
Position vacant - Luke Dempsey left the position after the qualifier loss to Laois.

Frontrunner:
The position is Anthony Rainbow’s if he wants it. The former Kildare player was assistant under Dempsey this year and Carlow have indicated that they want another outsider.

Cavan
Manager in place - Terry Hyland took over the reins from Val Andrews in April and has a four year term with Anthony Forde as his assistant.

Clare
Position vacant - Michael McDermott departed after three years at the helm of the Banner. A Munster final appearance this year was the highlight but there was frustration as Clare failed to gain promotion out of Division 4 of the Allianz FL.

Frontrunners:
Liam McHale - the former Mayo star was a selector under McDermott and highly regarded within the county.

John Kennedy - the Kerry All-Ireland winner could be lured back for a second term with the Banner, having worked as minor manager with the Kingdom in recent years.

Colm Collins - the Clare U21 manager also has his supporters.

Cork
Uncertain - Conor Counihan’s future is up in the air after his side’s All-Ireland semi-final defeat to Donegal two weeks ago. The Aghada man brought All-Ireland glory to the Rebels in his third year at the helm, 2010, but there has been frustration at losses in the quarter and semi-final stage these past two seasons. It would be no great surprise if Counihan walked away with U21 manager John Cleary a likely successor.

Derry
Position vacant - John Brennan’s two year term came to an end and Derry are yet again looking for a new manager.

Frontrunners:
Brian McIver - The former Donegal manager’s appointment is expected to be announced in the coming days, with Paddy Crozier and Paddy Tally part of his backroom team.

Liam Bradley - was linked with the vacancy once he left the Antrim job. His sons Paddy and Eoin are main men for Derry but it looks like he has been overlooked on this occasion.

Donegal
Manager in place - Jimmy McGuinness is going nowhere and has an All-Ireland final to look forward to in a couple of weeks.

Down
Uncertain - James McCartan has completed three years as manager but his future is unknown. An All-Ireland final appearance in year one has been followed with less positive displays in 2011 and '12.

Dublin
Position vacant - Pat Gilroy stood down after four years in charge of the Dubs, with last year’s All-Ireland win and three Leinster titles so show for his work.

Frontrunners:
Jim Gavin - The 1995 Sam Maguire winner has led the county’s U21 footballers to two All-Ireland wins in the past three years, with the 2010 success coming at the hands of Jim McGuinness’ Donegal. The job is his to turn down.

Dessie Farrell: The GPA CEO is minor manager for the past two years, with his charges warm favourites to win the All-Ireland final this year. If Gavin does not go for the job, then Farrell could find himself as Gilroy’s successor.

Fermanagh
Manager in place - Peter Canavan has already signed up for a second year and will be looking to build on the league promotion achieved in his first term.

Galway
Manager in place - Alan Mulholland has year one of a three year term under his belt. The All-Ireland minor and U21 winning manager got a baptism of fire in the championship with losses to Sligo and Antrim.

Kerry
Manager in place - Eamonn Fitzmaurice was swiftly appointed as Jack O’Connor’s replacement and arguably faces the biggest challenge of any Kerry manager since Paidi O Se was handed the keys the Kingdom in 1996.

Kildare
Manager in place - The Kildare county board have confirmed that Kieran McGeeney will continue for one more year. There had been speculation that the financial woes within the county could lead to cutbacks on team preparation, but those issues seem to have been overcome and Geezer is looking forward to a sixth year at the helm.

Kilkenny
Uncertain - John McGrath and Jimmy O’Connor manned the most unwanted job at intercounty level this past year. Selectors under Dick Mullins, the duo only took over the reins in January of this year, after the county had failed to field in the O’Byrne Cup. It is a little unfair to say, but we might have to wait until the first competitive game of 2013 to know with certainty who is in charge of the Cat’s next year.

Laois
Manager in place - Justin McNulty will be ratified for a third year later this month. He had club delegates calling or his head after the Leinster loss to Longford but the same people will be delighted to keep him after the O’Moore men then went on to reach an All-Ireland quarter-final.

Leitrim
Manager in place - George Dugdale and Barney Breen took over the reigns as joint managers when Mickey Moran was forced to stand aside late last year due to health reasons. The duo guided Leitrim to a first ever win in the All-Ireland qualifiers, with Wicklow despatched and went on to push Laois to the pin of their collar.

Limerick
Manager in place - Maurice Horan is set to continue after nobody else was nominated for the role. The Mayo native is due to be ratified this month.

Longford
Manager in place - Glenn Ryan will continue for a fourth year after the Longford board tied him down shortly after the county exited the championship. With back to back league promotions under his belt, Ryan is hot property in the management world.

Louth
Position vacant - Peter Fitzpatrick departed the scene after three years, which could never be described as boring.

Frontrunners:
Colin Kelly - the former star was county U21 manager this past year and is seen as the favourite for the role.

Fergal Reel - The St Patrick’s manager had Peter McDonnell as part of his backroom team, but the former Armagh boss has recently been announced as part of Paul Grimley’s management team in the Orchard County. That indicates that Reel will not get the nod on this occasion.

Mayo
Manager in place - James Horan has brought Mayo to a new level during his two years at the helm and if he delivers an All-Ireland later this month, he could have a job for life.

Meath
Position vacant - Seamus McEnaney’s tumultuous two year spell as Meath manager came to an end. With selectors walking out, votes of no-confidence from the county board, relegation to Division 3 and a Leinster final appearance - it was a roller coaster two years, that’s for sure.

Frontrunners:
Eamon O’Brien - Sean Boylan’s All-Ireland winning selector led Meath to an All-Ireland semi-final in his first year as manager in 2009 and a Leinster title the following season, before being cast aside by club delegates later that Autumn. He has strong county board support and will get the job if he lets his name go forward.

Liam Harnan - not afraid to ruffle a few feathers, Harnan’s stock was high after leading Skryne to a county title and dethroning All-Ireland champions Dublin while Meath U21 football manager. His criticism of the county board when he stood down as a senior selector will not be forgotten, but he would be a popular choice.

Paddy Carr - the former Louth manager won an All-Ireland club title with Kilmacud Crokes and is keen to get the job, having lost out to Colm Coyle in 2007.

Monaghan
Position vacant - Eamonn McEneaney stood down after two years which saw successive league demotions.

Frontrunners:
Aidan O’Rourke - the former Armagh ace has served as assistant in both Kildare and Down, and is now keen to become manager in his own right.

Malachy O’Rourke - the former Fermanagh manager led his native county to an Ulster final in 2008.

Brendan McDermott - the Cavan native recently stood down as Clare manager and his intercounty experience is an added plus.

Offaly
Manager in place - Emmett McDonnell was rubber stamped this week after stand in manager Tom Coffey indicated he did not want the job on a permanent basis. Coffey had taken over from Gerry Cooney, who resigned after just five months in the job.

Roscommon
Manager in place - Des Newton will take charge of the Rossies for a second year in 2013. A mixed league was followed by humiliation at the hands of Galway in the Connacht championship before a stunning win over Armagh in the qualifiers.

Sligo
Uncertain - Kevin Walsh has yet to make his intentions clear to the Sligo county board. After a narrow Connacht final loss to Mayo, Sligo fell apart in their round 4 qualifier loss to Kildare. Walsh has four years with the Yeats County under his belt. Paul Durcan, one of Walsh’s selectors, could take over the reins should the Galway man decide against staying on.

Tipperary
Uncertain - Peter Creedon took over from John Evans during the league and guided the Premier to round 4 of the All-Ireland qualifiers. He is keen to continue and it is expected that he will be handed the job on a permanent basis this month.

Tyrone
Manager in place - Mickey Harte signed up for three more years in May of this year as he intends to build a new look Tyrone team from the latest generation of footballers in the county.

Waterford
Position vacant - John Owens stood after completing his three year term.

Frontrunners:
Jason Ryan has moved to the head of the list after standing down as Wexford manager this week. The former Waterford player could be in demand elsewhere though.

Westmeath
Manager in place - Pat Flanagan’s had his proposed two year extension ratified by delegates this week. There was speculation that he could lose his job to Luke Dempsey, but after the midlanders came within a whisker of beating Kerry in the qualifiers, the county board stuck with their man.

Wexford
Position vacant - Jason Ryan has left the Model men after five exciting years, which saw an All-Ireland semi-final appearance and two voyages to the Leinster final.

Frontrunners:
Kevin Kehoe , who guided Wexford to their first ever Leinster U21 football title last year, is the early favourite to replace Ryan.

Wicklow
Manager in place - Harry Murphy helped Wicklow win the Allianz FL Division 4 title in his first year in charge and will be looking for further improvement in 2013.

Emmett O’Conghaile will start at midfield next year. McConnell is a beaten docket.

Hopefully sid. We can’t have another season with fennel and bastick in the middle with McConnell as back up. It will be interesting to see what the new manager does during the league. Even though brennan had a good game on Sunday I think he could be another who will be spending a lot more time on the bench.

Rainbow and Myler take over in Carlow.
