I’ve said this multiple times but the AI Football Championship is the only competition in the GAA that I know of that isn’t graded.

And therefore the best.

Neil Ewing of Sligo was the first person to properly make the argument in favour of the more equitable league format in the national press some years back. I never really came across a good argument against what he was saying.

I guess the rationale from a GAA point of view is that the straight Divisions 1-4 format gives you a Division 1 with the best teams in the country all playing each other and is supposedly a better television product.

If you’re a Dublin supporter, an elite Division 1 is great.

Your fixture list might be:
Kerry H
Armagh A
Tyrone H
Donegal A
Mayo H
Monaghan A
Meath H

Lots of juicy fixtures there, Saturday nights in Croke Park with pints at half time and some nice road trips.

But it leaves everybody else in the lurch.

You have to consider the wellness of the game as a whole.

Ger Gilroy, the Off The Ball lads and Colm Parkinson want a Gaelic football Premier League. They aren’t saying that, but that’s what they want. But that fucks the sport as a whole.

In the league, they play counties of their own standard.

But that’s the problem.

When you’re in Division 3 or Division 4 you play to the low standards you are faced with.

When you are in Division 1 you play to a Division 1 standard, or you drop out of it.

That creates the vicious circle of lack of competitiveness between the divisions which is reinforced with every year.

With the Divisions 1A/1B/2A/2B format the gaps between divisions were not as great.

Like, if you were Sligo. Wexford or Fermanagh, you could hope to get promoted to Division 1A or 1B and actually stay there and become properly competitive - and get the same diet of regular quality football that Dublin or Kerry were getting.

That forced Sligo/Wexford/Fermanagh etc. to up their standards to a place where they could actually compete in the championship - and it prevented the really strong counties galloping away.

The standards between counties were closer - because the format was more equitable.

If Wexford have been playing Carlow and Waterford and Leitrim all spring, how can they compete come championship?

But if they’ve been playing Dublin and Mayo and Roscommon and Derry and Laois, say, they then have a much better platform to up their standards to a place where they can compete.
