He literally ran them
Growler is a great nickname.
Laylay was a big loss. He would have been the goalie for the next 10 years and instead we were left with a succession of duds, starting with Ray Whitty
And Laylay
And Laylay
The Barryās had great nicknames. The brother Paul who played for Mount Sion (the rest of them played with Passage) was Gubby Barry.
Growler is a great nickname.
I played with a growler once (stop it), he was of course a corner who spent the game growling at windy corner forwards
A Munster U20 match between Cork and Clare had a tea time throw in of 6.15pm this evening.
Iād say thereās around 300 people at it.
Talk about a box ticking exercise in Fixture fulfilment.
Itās only U20 mate, relax
Youād wonder, if nothing else, whether the money men might start looking at it. Even the early rounds of the old U21 championship would have drawn decent crowds. Be interesting to see revenue for 2022/23 vs, say, 2014.

I listened to the Wexford Hurling Podcast for the first time this year on my run this morning to see if I could muster any enthusiasm for the split season championship. Former Wexford manager Cyril Farrell & Wexford legend & media favourite Tom Dempsey were previewing Galway-Wexford & chatting about the general hurling world. Cyril said he canāt believe the Leinster U20 hurling structure - a round robin that eliminates nobody. He said āthereās nobody going to the games only parents & uncles.ā
Iām very happy to see my own county Tipperaryās commitment to not giving a fuck about these round robins has filtered down to the underage grades this year.
Our Under 17ās are done and dusted for the season already having 0 wins from 3 and our Under 20ās will likely follow suit on Friday when the Limerickās ensure we are 0 wins from 3 there too.
I think Waterford are in a similar position and have effectively downed tools in both grades already.
Former Wexford manager Cyril Farrell
How did Cyril do as Wexford manager? He was manager in 1992 was it? Must have been viewed as a real coup at the time to acquire a former All-Ireland winning manager.
For those of us who can remember it was painful, confidence was at a sky high level.
Needless to say Kilkenny put a stop to things
Unlike Wexford to lose the run of themselves in such a fashion.
Unusual that he only stayed the one year. Even in 2023 youād give a manager with that CV a 2nd season to implement their style of play and āfollow the processā.
Are you sure Cyril Farrell was the manager of Wexford? My recollection is he was brought in as a high profile assistant, possibly with quasi-managerial powers but without the title of manager, maybe a bit like Pat Gilroy now with Dublin or Kieran McGeeney when he first got involved in the Armagh management team under Paul Grimley.
Yeah, I think youāre right. Christy Keogh/Kehoe was probably still manager. @Ralphie? You know the way you remember completely random stuff from childhood? I remember being at some Wexford game with my auld lad back then & he struck up conversation with the man beside us. I vividly recall yer man telling my auld lad that Cyril was working Wexford so hard in training that all the players were constantly vomiting during and after training sessions.
Martin Quigley I think. Christy Keogh was manager in 1993 alright.
Christy was 93 alright
I got the all clear to head up to Thurles on Sunday. Was looking doubtful for a bit but someone did me a turn and Iām off. Hope in my heart yet again. Iāll never learn.
