Gaa split season, killing Meath football since 2011

Round and round and round we go.

It is impossible to come up with a format whereby Noel McGrath can play 6 club championship games intertwined in between the current or old championship format due to inter county games.

The only thing that should change is the whole thing should go back 2/3 weeks which will probably happen in time.

+1.

Waterford & Wexford hurlers had the ideal championships in many respects. Finish on a high with a win & then get on with your lives.

Monaghan have beaten Clare, Kildare and Armagh to get to this stage. Sure you’d expect them to beat Clare and they always have a good chance against Kildare and Armagh. Particularly given both are windy. I think they’ve been the profits of a nice draw tbh.

I had a big shite this morning which was more entertaining than Cork v Derry. If counties had only one match a year they’d still play the same way because of cowardly managers and coaches.

Hard to believe Cork and Mayo players are burned out after playing 5 games in 12 weeks? Cork football championship starts on 30th of July followed by a 2 week break due to hurling championship games. Mayo football championship starts on 20th August I believe a full 6 weeks from Mayo exiting the championship. If players are burned out with that schedule things are bad

Its really 5 games in 6 weeks and they’ve been training for 8 or 9 months.

Pretty sure McStay had Mayo back in mid-October. Now they did get a week or so off after losing in Connacht and freshened up enough to beat Kerry, but its been downhill all the way since.

Fact is since April Cork and Mayo have played 5 games. Mayo took 2 weeks off after Roscommon defeat. They are hardly burnt out.

Mayo played three games in 14 days.

It’s gas to see all the lads who consigned club gaa until the autumn defend this rubbish.

Did you watch the games ?

It’s very unusual in rugby where players play three high intensity games games in a row. The World Cup and the lions tour are usually the only incidents where it happens.

You have absolute carnage. Season ending injuries. Players not finding form for 18 months and a few forced retirements.

That’s what ye split season odd balls are forcing on the county players now. Running them until they need hip and knee replacements.

Galway 2018 and mayo 2017 by a fluke had these sort of crazy seasons and the following season they were useless.

It’s frightening to hear the number of players playing With pain killers.

It simply isn’t sustainable. Sports simply aren’t meant to be professional. It’s a complete disaster.

Id agree. Knock out championship suited the amateur status. Lads are now playing a professional game without professional care.

How many big name players who should in theory be starting for their county next weekend in the AI Semi’s are missing due to injury?

Declan Hannon, Sean Finn, David Burke, Adrian Mullen, Mikey Carey, Martin Keoghan, Conor Cleary, John Conlon?

There will always be injuries but it would be interesting to see a comparison with previous years. Tipperary have just been particularly badly affected these last couple of years.

Excuses

It’ll become about who has the most money now and watch county boards bankrupt themselves trying to compete.

Its not an excuse but in the past 12 months Tipp lost John McGrath, Barry Heffernan, Craig Morgan, Paddy Cadell, Ger Browne and Brian McGrath to bad injuries.

O’Connor, Barrett, Morris & Forde all missed chunks of this year’s championship too and were rushing back which probably did them more harm than good.

A more interesting list will be how many players are injected with painkillers pre game so they’re able to play.

I wonder does the guy doing the injecting know there’s a club season to come?

It’s a disgrace what’s happening.

Limerick have the distinct advantage in that most of the panel are employed in that makey uppy recruitment place, which effectively allows them to recover like professionals in PJ McManus’s Martinstown Stud for weeks between games. No other county can offer that kind of collective recovery option to all players. It’s only some rare exceptions on an individual basis rather than across an entire county for their competitors, e.g. when Shefflin rang his boss in BOI in 2010 & said he was going to live in Limerick for a few weeks & wouldn’t be available for work.

The staffing crisis in UHL can actually be directly contributed to Limericks success in the hurling championship meaning half of Unijobs staff are out for months at a time

Rip Van Winkle here,it’s been like that for the last 30 years.
