Some auld lad in a pair of slacks, short sleeve shirt and Waterford baseball cap approached James Owens for a chat on the way back into town from Páirc Ui Chaoimh Nua yesterday*. James was dressed casually, sporting a white Wexford GAA polo shirt and a pair of fashionable shorts.
“You’re the referee, aren’t ya?”
“I am yeah.”
“Fair play. You’ve done some big games…”
“I did an All Ireland final alright.”
“Did you play much yourself?”
“Ah I played a bit.”
“Well you wouldn’t think it by the way you referee…”
And off he went.
*This did happen.
