I realize math isnât a strong point in Tipp, but if you drop back a midfielder to mark a forward, how many defenders do you have? You can call the spare defender who plays in front of the full back line whatever you like, pal.
Itâs for keeping the beating respectable by and large. Keeps a manager in place an extra season.
If Canning is man marked by a midfielder and Canning floats around the half/full forward line you will be playing 7 at the back. Galway will have 6 forwards. Is that not an atypical situation of a sweeper system?

No itâs fucking not, when Kilkenny were pulling Eoin Larkin back around Centre Field/ Half Back were they playing with a sweeper? Christ above no wonder Galway havenât won an All Ireland since they stopped getting a bye into the semi-final.

If Ronan Maher drops back to protect the full back line and isnât man marking anyone, how is that different to the role De Burca plays with Waterford? In that scenario is his job not to cut off the supply of ball to the Galway inside line and launch attacks, freed up from man marking duties?
The lengths the Tipp lads are going to here to deny the suggestion of playing a sweeper is comical.

The tactic of the Waterford Full Back line in the 2015 Munster Final was to allow the ball to break in behind them and for De Burca to sweep behind them.
Last year Tipp pushed right up on him, not allowing him the space to sweep behind the full back line.
I said he would play Maher Centre Back but deeper. Joe Canning will drift between Centre Field and Centre Forward, why would you have your Centre Back follow him and leave the entire centre open?

Chronically busy week here, some decent hurling talk and sniping going on here, but a lot of filler. Canning wasnât fit for the leinster final, couldnât move freely at all, some brainless cunts here think they have him sussed from that game. Heâs still not 100% now but will be better. If Conor Cooney moves out who would be better full?
