A handjob
John Allen is the lad you’re thinking of. He was the DJ. Was ents officer for the su. From Ballina. He spent about 7 years doing an arts degree and then went off to the US. There were a few other Mayo lads involved as well. Dominic fahy, Fergus hastings, steve martin. Great times
Very hipster. Probably a spoken word poem
That’s the lad. Heard he’d fallen on hard times for a while in the States but that was good few years back and third hand.
And to think the iconic GPO is being turned into a tan pub.
Place was rancid but brilliant.
Ah jesus it was a shit hole in fairness
I had a snigger at “iconic”
Place was rancid but brilliant.
It was fucking brilliant. A pure kip but sure who gave a fuck.
There must be very few nightclubs left anywhere in the country
Tbh I never liked night clubs… The warrick was alway my favorite spot as a young lad
Id drink a goldschlager out of a test tube right now
The Warwick closing was the final nail in the coffin for Salthill. There was no reason to be in Salthill after 11 bells for about 15 years after it.
That’s a fact
Were there many nightclubs in Galway City when Salthill was in its heyday?
I was in CPs in Salthill 25 odd years ago. We were camping in a campsite about 2 miles up the road. We were drinking in Galway from early morning and made our way to Salthill that evening.
All I can recall is the Rockafeller Skank was all the go at the time and myself and my pals going absolutely spastic when it came on. When we left the club there had been an apocalyptic shower of rain and there was flash floods on the streets. We had to walk the 2 mile to the campsite and of course the tent was after collapsing under the deluge drowning everything inside it … We had no change of clothes either so ended up sleeping in the back of a corolla van wrapped in old jackets that were in there.
We were in a bad place in the back of the van and all of a sudden around 4 am our driver says fuck this and he hops into the front and turns on the car and opens all the windows so to keep him awake. We were back in our own beds in Cork before breakfast time. I’d say I was never again as cold as I was in my wet boxers in the back of that van with the windows open bombing down the road
Good night in fairness
CJ’s?
The Warrick on St Stephen’s night was alway a glorious sight. The general standard of bird was off the charts to my buckfast fulled mind. All of them Salthill. All potentially high maintenance. But sure fuck it.
The walk back to town was always a cunt.
Pretty much none. Then central park opened and cornered the hospital/nurse market, having originally been a redneck club. Then the alley and kno knos which became the gpo then the others.
Salthill had the oasis, the Warwick, trends (a variety of previous entities), the castle , cheers, rumours, the os.
You went to any or all for late night drinking first , and ladies. You’d finish up about 130 and head to a party usually.
The oasis decline was dramatic and hard to explain in a way. It really made itself as it was cheap to get into. The Warwick just became a victim of the decline of the nightclub really. A right shame because DOC was a gent, and it had far more about it than any other.
I could do chapter and verse on most.
The Warwick kept going as the local Galway and salthill crowd used it as it aged with them.
Once the students stayed in town, it was the end for them all.
The Warwick closing was the final nail in the coffin for Salthill.
When did it finally go? I remember being up there for a gig May Bank Holiday 2007 but don’t think I was in there again after that
