Gary Speed - RIP

He tweeted:

“Suicide is a mix of the most tragic, most selfish, most terrible (and I want to believe preventable) acts out there.”

Don’t think what SS is saying is correct then but I assume some media outlets have taken the quote and attempted a hatchet job on it?

Exactly. The headline is:

Twitter rant on Speed suicide calling him ‘selfish’ sparks fury

Is it any surprise, when the Tweet prior to the one you highlighted was

Have the media in this country got no morals at all? A family torn apart and already the vultures are looking 4 a story!! Despicable if true

Uncle Tom owes Joey an apology

He has described suicide as a selfish act in a discussion about Gary Speed, therefore he is branding Speed selfish in my book.

Joey appears unaware that Tweeting on Twitter is the media. He has also added to the pain of the Speed family by badmouthing a dead man’s sad and desperate actions.

Thought that quote was a little profound for Joey…it would appear from a quick search that he has nicked it from this forum. Poor Joey trying to look clever again.

I find it impossible to understand.
It’s one thing putting on a brave face on Football Focus but if he was sending jokey texts to a mate when by himself it’s very hard to comprehend how he could go so low within a matter of hours.

You think that’s bad? This was posted underneath yesterday’s Guardian Football Weekly:

The stars are not wanted now: put out every one;
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood.
For nothing now can ever come to any good.

Firstly, this was made famous by the rom-com Four Weddings and a Funeral. Secondly, it’s the kind of mawkishness that only undermines a public outpouring of grief.

True, it’s strange alright. Speculation rarely comes to any good in these circumstances though.

He described suicide as a mix of tragic, selfish and terrible. That’s not the same as calling Gary Speed selfish no matter how you try to put it together. You’re better than that.

Apparently, a suicidal person is at the most calm and content just before the act. It’s something to do with the relief they feel at the thought of everything coming to an end. Almost like an out of body experience of some type, or like a well thought out plan all fitting together. Like you, I find it impossible to understand but it would certainly explain the texts as an example along with some of the other incidents mentioned on the suicide thread that dancarter and gaillimharais posted.

Ah good, so if I label all Wexford men as cunts you won’t take umbrage as I haven’t called you a cunt as such? Strange logic.

Plenty incidents like this runt, remember Conrad O’ Sullivan of Cork Con was exactly the same. Had been at training or gym, can’t remember which, and also arranged meeting some people for later in the week. Did it over night then. Extremely sad and hard for anyone to understand really.

A friend of mine who is a psychologist believes some people are actually programmed from a young age to do it.

tragic selfish and terrible would also be a great description of limerick hurling

Not sure I can buy fully into that, as this denies that we, as a speicies, have freedom of choice, and are pre programmed. By this logic I cant excuse any current behaviour or decision.Granted our childhood / past does play are large part in our decision making, or subconscious, but all learned traits/ behaviours can also be unlearned.

Dont… Just dont .

Such sweeping generalisations don’t usually bother me so no, I won’t take umbrage.

Wouldn’t agree with the programming thing Kev. Maybe some people are far more likely based off background or circumstance but I could never buy into your mates theory.

Having had a couple of people close to me die of suicide they way this was explained to me is that because they have made up their mind to end their suffering, they feel a big weight has been lifted of their shoulders and therefore prior to committing the suicide they person always seems to be happier as they know that their suffering is coming to an end.

As for Joey Barton’s comment, I myself see nothing wrong with it as a suicide is a mixture of everything that was quoted in that tweet. It maybe wrong timing wise but for me seeing the heartbreak and upset it causes to those left behind it can seem a selfish act by those they left behind to mourn the loss of a loved one.
