How comparable are figures from 1969 though? Suicides would have been covered up more then.
Copycat suicide where loads of fellas from the one circle of friends kill themselves is very common as far as I can see too. It might be that the suicide of a friend hurts them so much they do it themselves or even that they see the reaction it causes and romanticises it a bit for them.
The idea that young lads these days ‘have it soft’ is one I wouldn’t agree with at all. A lot of kids these days grow up in torturous situations due to drugs, alcohol and violence that were unimaginable years ago.
Cluster suicide it is called Gola. Researchers believe that it is triggered by the group ‘leader’ committing suicide and the others who ‘looked up’ to this person following his/her lead.
How many suicides are covered up now?
He left one of his clubs after having been required to give a half-time talk, as captain, in place of his manager, whom drink had rendered temporarily incapable of speech. The fans of the club in question were mystified by his departure, but he had signed a confidentiality agreement and never spoke of the incident.
Who would that be?
Howard Kendall at Everton.
I’d imagine alcohol was a much bigger problem twenty years ago in comparison to now. Violence? Well it depends where you’re from I suppose.
Not a chance
Some lads may know this.
There was a 1st/2nd year student showing unsuitable material on his mobile phone a couple of years ago. School confiscated the phone. The young fella went home and killed himself with the his father’s gun.
You would not believe the amount of bullying that goes on in schools as a result of social networking sites etc. Things are getting worse, not better.
The only alcoholics around where I live now are the same alcoholics here twenty years ago. I don’t think it’s a big issue with younger people today.
FFS
Totti,
Alcohol is a massive problem amongst young people today. We would have third year students and younger who would be heavy drinkers.
Oh I would believe it. It’s bad enough seeing the things adults say on social networking websites.
Fair enough, maybe it’s better hidden today but I know back home that it’s the same people in the pub everyday as it was 20 years ago.
RTE News - no mention of how Gary Speed died.
It’s definitely who it is referring to, whether it’s the exact story or not is another matter. Kendall was widely rumoured to have a drink problem, and Speed alluded to the fact that there were circumstances behind his leaving that he wouldn’t go into in public.
Ah come on now…you don’t have to go to a pub everyday to be an alcoholic. Less and less people under 21 are going to pubs these days. Doesn’t mean these people aren’t drinking heavily on a regular basis.
At the same time, it makes it a lot harder to clarify if alcoholism is indeed a bigger problem these days.
I would say that the amount of off licenses and ability to get alcohal has increased exponentially over the last 20 years. 20 years ago people had very little choice but to go to the pub for booze so it wasn’t as easy to hide it
