General Election 2011

This election prediction website is pretty good:

Cowen will not run in Laois/Offaly.

My vote is now up for grabs.

Barry Cowen will offer real change in Laois/Offaly.

Thats that sorted then, cheers Sid.

Good riddance to the prick. His facilitation of the land deal for young Haughey at Dublin Airport was scandalous.

Bizarre front bench from Micheál Martin today - obviously chancing his arm with the electorate with a few of them. Averil Power (Fionnán’s girlfriend) gets a front bench position despite not getting elected as a councillor in the local elections. She’s the sole FF candidate in Dublin North East and obviously this is a tactic to give certain candidates the appearance of authority in constituencies where FF want to retain a seat. But for fuck’s sake, she was routed in the local elections. Hope she gets a similar result in the general election.

FFS.

Nobody does “impartial” like Fionnan.

Who is going to be Taoiseach for the 20 or so days between the election day and the frst sitting of the new Dail? The constitution states that the Taoiseach has to be a TD. Coughlan? :o

I assume he’ll still be a TD until the new Dáil sits for the first time.

Sunday may have been a red letter day for supporters of Cllr Gerry Kilrane and Ivan Connaughton with their selection to run for Fianna Fail in Roscommon/South Leitrim, but for others it was an afternoon of bitter disappointment.

At the 11th hour Headquarters approved a decision to overturn the original party directive which called for only one candidate to be nominated at the Convention. The new two candidate strategy with one representative set from selection from Roscommon and the remaining from South Leitrim, caused uproar amongst delegates from North Roscommon with some walking out as Cllr Gerry Kilrane made his thank you speech.

The anger was such that some North Roscommon delegates warned their Leitrim counterparts not to cross the bridge in Carrick-on-Shannon seeking votes for Cllr Kilrane while others vented their anger at Convention Chairperson, Minister Brian Lenihan in the wake of the decision.

Over 500 delegates packed The Abbey Hotel in Roscommon last Sunday for the Convention. With five nominees in Co Roscommon, Councillors Rachel Doherty, Eugene Murphy, Orla Leyden and John Keogh along with Ivan Connaughton; and Gerry Kilrane in South Leitrim, it was never going to be a straightforward affair.

Fuck them, greedy bastards just wanting the 3 seats for themselves. If Kilraine can keep pace with Connaughton he’ll benefit from Kenny’s transfers (assuming elimination) and could sneak the seat. Kelly (Lab) must fancy his chances and Ming will get a decent vote from maverick section of Roscommon but the old saying is still true, votes don’t swim.
Kilraine in with a shout…

Fogra…Your local Independent councillor was making noises there for a few days (discussing his options with advisers)…You’ll be disappointed to hear he’s not going to run “at this time”.

I heard that and no doubt he didn’t run because Kilraine was ratified.

I think that Ming will do well. He is chair of the Council in Roscommon and is big on the turfcutting issue. Also this is a time for the maverick candidates - if he doesn’t get it now he never will.

H’on Ming he has my full support

Outstanding

Christ Enda Kenny is doing his best to put FG down at the bottom of my ballot paper.

His line today about the empty chair at the debate symbolising emigration was cringeworthy. Between that and the absurd “no Irish for the leaving cert” project I’m growing very sick and tired of him already. As horrible as FF are I’ll be leaving to other people to put FG anywhere on their ballot. Impossible to imagine Enda Kenny as leader of the country to be honest. I don’t think there’s ever been a less convincing leader of a political party, nevermind Taoiseach.

That was yesterday’s excuse. Today’s is that he has a very busy schedule and he won’t have time.

I think I mentioned it here a while ago that the whole point of Kenny is his sheer blandness. FG were in poll position a long time ago, as such the safe bet for them is someone who won’t alienate people. He’s a blank slate. Yes a certain amount of people will be irritated by the fact that he doesn’t say or do anything, but for FG a vocal leader may only serve to drive much of the electorate toward Labour. It’s an interesting strategy and it seems to be working well.

It is working well alright, I just find it horrific. No harm in taking some of the personality out of the equation but he’s not just bland and short on rhetoric, he does nothing. Too many of the new ideas (like the Irish language one) are just pathetic efforts at populism. He’s no leader and has no influencing skills, he’d be an embarrassing leader to be honest.

Trevor Sargent is kicking asses and taking names on Vinny at the moment. Was always impressed by him and I think he’ll be the one Green to come out of this government with his reputation intact (letters to Gardai aside!)

Trevor is definitely one of the good guys. A noble politician.

The mortgage relief plan is similar to their old one for compensating Eircom shareholders too.

Their plans for the Health Service are decent though.

Kenny is incredibly uninspiring but people are getting bogged down in personalities again. Surely policies should be more important.

Who you going voting for this time Rocko ?
