General election 2016 results HUB

FG really should call Fianna Fail’s bluff on this and continually re-emphasise the view that they and Labour cannot form a minority government with 58 seats, that they are willing to go into coalition government with FF, which has effectively no policy differences with them, and that the ball is entirely in Fianna Fail’s court.

If Fianna Fail force another election through pig-headed arrogance, it won’t look good for them.

How many referendums did he lose? Not to mention a very poor showing in the last local elections?
He is utterly inept, and the main reason a lot of people won’t countenance voting FG.
Any idiot would have been able to lead them to the result they got in 2011, the FG seem to have put far too much stock in it.

They need to turf out him and the nonce enabler Noonan and they may well get some shred of credibility back

Who’s ye? I’m a Green Party supporter mate.

@Sidney, Any word on our last two vols?

I agree. FG would be mad to go into anything other than a full coalition with FF as they will be fucked over at the most opportune moment. Add to that that Kenny is finished & there will be a heave very soon, after which FF will have to pull the plug as there will be considerable anger out there if a new Taoiseach is elected without going to the people. The only likely outcome at the moment for me is another election in a few months.

FG need to put up the charade that they want a new Government. Sure FF aren’t interested either. To ensure FF don’t come around they need to antagonise the fuck out of FF, use meeting rooms with Kevin O’Higgins and Dick Mulcahy portraits and the likes. Kenny then needs to announce he’s going and that he’ll announce another election as soon as FG pick a new leader.

Somebody mentioned on TV that changes to the way FG do their own internal business would mean that it would take 6 weeks before a new leader could be elected.

Varadkar has performed very poorly over the last year.

He appears to me to be someone who is growing increasingly disillusioned and could leave politics within the next few years.

Coveney is overrated. He’s not a good debater.

Frances Fitzgerald might be a stop gap option although again she is not a good debater.

There’s some dearth of talent there in both FG and FF.

If fiana Gael and Sinn Fein change leaders they’ll eat back into fiana fails seats easily.

Kenny nobbled Varadkar with the Health portfolio. It’s very hard (even for Leo) to be preaching from pulpit while preceding over that eternal disaster.

Clare: ‘I look forward to the day you lose your seat’ - Labour TD Michael McNamara raises doubts about running again

Who is the above quote from the headline attributable to? It doesn’t clarify in the piece.

Never underestimate the pig-headedness of the average Fianna Fail voter.

So Kenny can stay on as a caretaker until then. Much like Cowen and Bertie before him. He can take a victory lap in that time. I know the Dáil is full of beligerent cunts but this is one election where barring the Indos and the PBP alliance, no one can be seriously happy. The 4 main parties would surely back themselves to win more next time out. For Labour it can’t get much worse, for FF & SF they’ll feel they left seats out there with vote management and FG know they ran a dreadful campaign that can only be improved on.

Surely if they know a new poll is coming, they’ll put Kenny in place as Taoiseach for a few weeks. He can even pick a national government or something in the interim but giving Gerry a cabinet portfolio for even a few weeks might not be palatable to FF/FG tbf.

How much a swing was there between the main parties when we had multiple elections in the early 80s?

Would there realistically be much of a swing if we were to have an election between now and July aside from a few seats either way

It depends on how well we do in the euros, pal.

Aside from Alan Kelly benefitting from a strong John Delaney showing at the Euro’s, what way would the results effect it?

I’d imagine a good showing would be bad for the left as we would still be partying hard and the world would seem great… A woeful performance like 4 years ago might see an even greater backlash against the establishment and calls for the ra to wipe of Kenny and co altogether. A poor NI performance might also aid this as the public might feel a united football team, like the Rugby, might be the best way forward for soccer on this island. Partitionists like Martin and Kenny would not benefit here.

Well if we’re putting a woman into the highest office in the land we may as well throw our hat at it.

Who are the realistic candidates for next leader of FG?

Richard Bruton - leader of one past failed heave, possibly too old.

Simon Coveney - wasn’t he part of the attempted heave too? Seems to have done a reasonable job in agriculture. Does polling behind Martin and McGrath in Cork affect his credibility or not?

Varadkar - smart/smug guy, struggling in health. Not sure they’d elect a gay leader.

Fitzgerald - might be considered a safe pair of hands. Seems a bit lightweight.

Noonan - too old, failed leader in the past, moral and ethical questions to answer.

The Rest - am I missing anyone obvious? Charlie Flanagan or someone.
