General Election 2016

Gerry on radio one now

Gerry in a shambles on RTE 1. Interview about SF manifesto. Every time the presenter asks a question about the detail, Gerry unable to answer. He just reaches for slogans. He says they have worked out their politicise in “forensic detail” but can’t give any of that detail. I’d say Pearse and Eoin O’Broin are cringing somewhere.

Pretty much like all the other parry leaders so.

Not that far off. Gerry doesn’t like being made look like a fool - very tetchy at the end. Noonan on next - let’s see how he gets on against a well briefed interviewer.

What a load of tosh. Every main party in this state has been involved in criminality and ignored the Democratic will of the people.

Lowry, ray Burke, bertie , Charlie, and all the OIRA heads in labour.

Its just double standards and hypocrisy

Lowry is no longer a member of Fine Gael.

Do Fianna FĂĄil continue to protect Ray Burke or Bertie? Afaik neither are members of that Party anymore.

No political party is free of corruption worldwide.

SF are an outlier in that being murderers is allowed because of a so called cause. However, when we look at the cases of McCauley or Slab Murphy they will use flimsy language and causes to continue to defend these people. SF essentially recognised the Dáil in 1986 but in 1996 had associates rob a State institution and those associates murdered a police officer of the State. SF argued it was an act in war time. SF argued it should come under the suspicious of the Good Friday Agreement. Pearse McCauley’s letters from jail were given a standing ovation at the SF Ard Fheis in 2003.

Gerry Adams did not go to the authorities about his brother despite knowing about his indiscretions for years. If that was a FG or FF, not only would they not be still leading that party, but it would be politically impossible for them to still be involved with daily politics. It’s okay though because SF HQ came up with a whimsical personality for Gerry on Twitter.

Nobody gets away with this stuff except for SF. No party is perfect, but no party gets as much rope as SF. Until they rid themselves of these creatures they can fuck off with their moaning.

Noonan was the opposite - too keen to get into the details.

What the chattering classes don’t understand is that Sinn Fein’s appeal is in their anti-establishment posture. And the more these media pundits attack them the more they reinforce that appeal. It’s quite hilarious to watch because they’ll never understand it. They still see themselves as fiercely independent journalists, whereas everyone else rightly sees them as part of the same set.

An apologist for a rotten establishment who a recession battered, disillusioned electorate have lost faith in is only going to strengthen the populists he/she attacks.

He’ll be posting about rubber ducks later on Twitter, it will be alright.

Sorry if some people expect SF to be held to the same standards as others by the Irish electorate.

Unfortunately there are enough people who feel entitled to handouts for life and believe in their faux nationalist bullshit that will go for them. A good 10-15% of Fianna Fáil’s old vote.

You don’t get it either. There is not enough of a nationalist vote in Ireland to justify Sinn Fein’s poll numbers. They are seen as a departure from the FF/FG cartel and that’s why people want to vote for them. It’s amusing that you can delight in Trump’s populist appeal in one thread and seethe with rage at Sinn Fein’s in another. If you think that the relentless assault of INM journalists on Sinn Fein over a decade and a half is about ‘holding Sinn Fein to the same standards’ you’re not even being honest with yourself.

The only thing that will dampen Sinn Fein’s growth is economic growth. They have been throwing IRA soundbites at them for 15 years to no avail. The non-aligned (to FF/FG) voters see those for the point-scoring efforts that they are, and have a far more nuanced view of the troubles than the chattering classes give them credit for. People who remember John Bruton being sick of answering questions about the “fu*king peace process” are going to take his party’s shrieks about the IRA with a pinch of salt.

Chattering won’t stop Sinn Fein’s rise. Only an end to the economic malaise can do that.

eh, the blueshirts themselves refused to pay taxes that were due ffs.

To be honest - I don’t think anyone who listens to politics at 1 or whatever it’s called is an undecided or soft voter so the interviews have very limited effect either way.

Wtf what you lista n to

Wrong. SF are on c 20%.

They are taking votes from Labour and Fianna Fáil’s old core. The people I’m talking about, the people who feel entitled to a living and those who are armchair nationalists. The latter it was always thought would be easily caught for SF once the GFA was signed and they moved down south properly. FF delayed it with handing out goodies during the 2000s.

They are organised and have acolytes all over comment sections of social media and elsewhere to ensure negative stuff is drowned out. Labour in coalition didn’t deliver their lofty promises (in a coalition government, where people seem to not understand that compromise must be made) and that vote has gone to SF.

It’s not truly anti establishment. It’s a vote that’s always been there. It’s the give me give me give me vote which FF got in the 2000s, Labour got in 2011 and SF have grabbed now.

Trump and Sanders are a genuine reaction from people looking for change. The people voting for SF would be delighted if they got USC cut and no water charges.

Going on about the SF section of the Irish public looking for “change” is bullshit. They are looking for the party which will give them handouts. Hence why Fianna Fáil have reverted to claiming to be a centre left party of fairness now. That’s where the soft vote is in Ireland. This is a country where the State giving out goodies is expected by the electorate. Real change would be a party who promised genuine welfare reform.

On the IRA stuff, again it isn’t wrong to mention it. Anyone with a shred of decency cannot believe that SF are in the national discourse. If Enda Kenny didn’t go to the Gardai for nearly a decade like Gerry Adams did, I wouldn’t expect him to be in charge for very long.
