I have a close friend works with a number of children who are currently homeless/living in hotels and they maintains that the negative psychological impact on their development is massive. A constant theme she has noticed is that they will go into meltdown over something which will appear on the face of it insignificant such as their school uniform not being right or a toy being left back in the hotel as these are the only things they subconsciously feel they have control over.
I can’t even imagine what it must be like to try and rear children or be reared in those circumstances. God only knows what neuroses these children will develop and what they will become once they hit puberty and on into adulthood.
Sure thing - sure we may as well promise increased spending everywhere too- more houses, more hospitals, earlier pensions. Those corporate taxes will take care of it.
I agree with that but I have an issue with ladies getting pregnant when they are homeless and already have three or four kids. There has to be some element of personal responsibility.
A lot of lads pontificating now about people stuck in cycles of poverty, which they are, or lacking housing, but giving no suggestions as to how fix that.
To fix this housing crisis there needs to be mass public housing built fast. Waiting for a certain percentage of estates to be given over to social housing is proving politically impossible and is far too slow. theres a crisis so a quick response needed. As for people stuck in cycles they’ll have to be educated and helped out of it but that will take a generation or more. And it will take making parents responsible for their childrens actions and putting and huge obligation on them to keep them in schools or training and away from anti social behavior and trouble. Does ireland have the stomach for that kind of social engineering?
Living in a hotel isn’t the cause. There are lots of children in under developed countries that live in far worse situations and don’t develop these neuroses. I’d imagine any negative impact is caused by the guilt and the shame of the parents and their negative outlook on the situation. Also of the attitude in Ireland where people will bring up the fact that they are living in a hotel, you know the questions, you know the busy type I’m talking about, the questions and the probing. Probably slagging from other kids too.
Kids are extremely adaptable and robust mate.
The stigma attached to being down on your luck needs to be removed, not all of them are there by choice.
I take your point but I also agree with @Big_Dan_Campbell. Wasn’t there a report completed last year by some qualified type which concluded that children living in hotels and sheltered accommodation are way behind their peers? This covered things like motor skills (no room or facilities to learn to walk, run, jump etc) and some poor kids of 4/5 years old were having trouble swallowing as they weren’t used to eating proper meals, and were living on soups, yogurts and stuff like that. It made me cry (cc @grapes).

I didn’t see the report. Those are physical conditions caused by the situation that should be easily rectified. There are a plethora of free playgrounds with good equipment all over the country. These kids surely have access to those?
Surely to fuck, there are subsidies in place to ensure the people in this situation are able to feed their kids with proper meals?
The state has a constitutional duty of care to every child in the country
Like any report, I’ll ask the same question I always do, has it lead to any action by anyone to rectify the findings. I won’t hold my breath
