I think they’re making some stupid promises now alright and have surely done previously too. However, I think that they have managed the budget relatively prudently in the face of huge pressures to ramp up spending indiscriminately.
The last budget was relatively unprecedented for a pre-election budget in that it actually tried to keep a lid on things. This is good for the country because rampant spending off an ever narrowing and unsustainable tax base is what fucked us up the last time
I think it’s clear though that voters don’t particularly value this and would prefer to be wooed by some of the mad auction politics of the last couple of days.

I think most of the electorate see through the bullshit tho - there’s a lot of genuine anger out there re housing / health/ crime and FG are just not good at PR/ Empathy and getting out ahead of issues – Varadkar himself is almost arrogant nearly every time he opens his mouth and his neoliberal stance just wont cut it in a country this small. He longs to be a tory but has to contend with the Healy-Raes of this world and it eats him up inside.
