Capitalism? What should replace it?

Capitalism is an economic system not a form of government. I think government has to be completely overhauled to make it accountable. What’s the role of government? Supposedly to serve the people. Does anyone believe that, it’s actually a really bad joke to even say it out loud.

The whole party system has failed, it makes absolutely no difference to the great majority of people in the US whether its a Democratic or Republican controlled government, no more than FF or FG in Ireland. Look at the cunts in Washington at the moment, they will spend weeks and tens of millions now on the impeachment trial, a trial that nobody is watching and everybody knows the outcome.

Run it more like a private company or I suppose more accurately a non profit. The electorate are the shareholders, maybe have an election not just for TDs but also for the Taoiseach. Let the Taoiseach select his cabinet ministers and have them select their staff, essentially a national government. Maybe hold an election for Taoiseach every two years which would effectively be a vote of confidence, and elections for TDs every 4 years.

The whole concept of opposition parties in government is also a bit exaggerated, an excuse for having a bigger government than necessary. If you have a majority government there is absolutely nothing the opposition can do anyway, what can Labour do in the UK right now, absolutely nothing. Let the people decide whether the government or the Taoiseach is doing a good job or not. If they were actually accountable they might do something other than posturing.

Sure if the minister for housing is struggling to find a place what hope have the rest of us :man_shrugging:

Any examples of media outrage of 24 year olds not being able to buy a house? I must have missed it.

You’ve no proof of that.

So all we need to do is house the 52 rough sleepers in Dublin and that’s the homeless problem sorted. Good man. Drop Eoghan Murphy an email there and tell him. It will be a load off his mind.

Just out of idle curiosity, where did you come up with the fact that Ireland has the highest level of immigration in Europe and this is going on for years? Did Noel Grealish tell you?

I think the problem lies with the system more than the people in the system although both are culpable. If you are a child born into social housing and you see 2 parents (assuming they have a stable family unit) that have no work ethic then this problem perpetuates. To break the cycle of a welfare state you have to incentivise and not reward dysfunctional behavior which is what we are doing. If a toddler sees its mother going out to the shop to pick up a carton of fags in her pyjamas this is not a good example to teach. I saw previous comments about flooding pre school with money to equalise the opportunities at the youngest possible entry level. I agree with all that but the bad habits learned at home and in the enclave of a social housing estate is what will carry them for the rest of their lives. Parenting is the key issue not only from taking care of the child but imparting standards and expectations on them in their formative years.

A lot of lads missing the point that poverty is not just about money and means, there are huge situation and generational factors at play . These children are born into families with a poverty of ambition and it is an incredibly tough cycle to break. There are plenty of people out there in disadvantaged areas trying to eek by.

All well and good talking about these dole scroungers with their skyt sports and holidays in lanzarote. I wouldn’t wish their lives, neuroses and poverty of ambition on anyone or maintain that they have it easy. A lack of self worth is a big burden to bare.

Peter Casey running in Donegal and in Castleknock.

Lots of lads blaming the parents, not paying any attention to the cycle where these parents had parents themselves and were given next to no chance to succeed or grow outside their constraints.

It’s amazing that these lads cant see beyond their own lived experience but yet they expect others to at the same time. I’m disgusted by it all really.

Over the past years I’ve seen numerous kids who’ve been fostered with a family I know. More than a few cases we’ve seen where the kids will develop rapidly with the foster parents, but then the mother will lodge some sort of application, get the kids back and the childs whole life spirals downwards again. The parents are literally poison to these kids hopes.

What can be done in these circumstances? Outside of permanently removing the children, which is an absolute last resort, how can they be supported?
