Anyone done this recently? I have been meaning to do it for ages now and finally getting round to it. I bought a house two years ago now and have been employed for three years but have never done anything about it. I’m looking to get tax back on medical expenses, bin tags and other work expenses such as union fees. Anyone know is there one form I can fill in for all expenses other than medical or is there a series of forms and how strict are revenue in looking for receipts etc? Just applied for my revenue pin which was apparently on a form I got at the start of the year. It’s almost as if they make the process so boring that no one will apply to get their taxes back. I hate this sort of thing. No idea what I’m owed but have been surprised at amounts work colleagues have gotten back so should be worth all this cr-p in the end.
I had a thread about it before larry but I can’t really help you as, typically enough, I never got around to finding out exactly what I needed to fill in - never mind going ahead and doing it.
Dunno if there’s anything of use in the thread but here’s the link:

I got tax back for about 5years of Refuse last year(think 5 is the max nowdays they backdate not sure though maybe4)
All I did was type up a letter with the dates of the refuse I paid and asked to be reimbursed(give your account details) and they paid the money into my account and I never showed any receipts to no one.
Also I got taxback for laser surgery I had to fill out a Med1 form in january the year after and fire it in to the tax office and got a cheque within a few weeks.
You can do most claims online now Larry all you need is a special pin.
Thanks for the link Bandage. Matter of interest how much did you get back balloobasluvsbeer? Awaiting pin from revenue now.
between 200 and 300 for the refuse(cant remember exactly) and over 800 for the laser(cost me 4200 at the time)
Requested the P21 last week. They said that I @Copper_pipe underpaid tax by 1 cent for the tax year 2018.
This underpayment will not be collected at this time
Nice of them not to go looking for it anyway
I done it today. Be shocked if I got anything back.
I have a buddy who enquired about getting tax back and ended up owing mr taxman over €30k
Apparently he had been working for a guy who was paying him through the c35 system for a good few years and hadn’t realised he had to pay his own tax,
He’s not Irish btw
How did he think he was due to get tax back if he hadn’t been paying any?
But yeah, I definitely wouldn’t be applying unless I was sure I was going to get some back.
If you are PAYE you’re grand applying. If you aren’t your accountant shouldn’t be over paying your tax anyway.
I’ve seen cases where the payroll people have fucked up. Happens more often than you’d think.
I don’t know how they manage it, some people are just incompetent.
35% was deducted on the C35 payment.
You should always owe your accountant more than you owe the taxman
Ah yeah, I suppose that’s forgiveable enough for a non-national who may not be overly familiar with the system.
Probably encouraged bystories from friends in other lines of work getting money back.
Still, personally, I’d be very cautious before applying in any situation, PAYE or otherwise. The calculation is not difficult, takes 10 mins and at least you’ll have some idea of whether you owe something or are due money back.
There are many weak points in the payroll process… Tax credits not being applied correctly by software, software deductions not updated correctly with latest budget changes and Revenue have their moments of madness too… They still have open issues around the new PMOD employmentIDs which is fucking up peoples tax credits.
Ye must have shitty software so. Would ye ever consider testing it?
The Indians never got the hang of USC mate.
Was always a big ask when ABC was beyond them.
He was working in anpther job as a paye worker and thought he’d be due a few quid back
This was over 10 years ago so Not 100% sure of the c35 thing but it was a case of him having to pay his own tax anyways which he didn’t realise
