Rory McIlroy, just the sixth teenager to win on the European Tour, now stands 16th in the world.

McIlroy, who only a week ago said that making it into the games top 20 was one of his goals for the year, did it in one mighty leap beating Justin Rose by one shot at the Dubai Desert Classic.

Only by finishing second did Rose stay ahead of McIlroy in the rankings. He climbed back to 15th.

Latest leading positions:

1 Tiger Woods 10.46pts, 2 Sergio Garcia 7.96, 3 Padraig Harrington 6.56, 4 Phil Mickelson 6.51, 5 Vijay Singh 6.40, 6 Henrik Stenson 5.25, 7 Robert Karlsson 5.11, 8 Geoff Ogilvy 5.09, 9 Kenny Perry 4.81, 10 Anthony Kim 4.70

11 Camilo Villegas 4.62, 12 Lee Westwood 4.44, 13 Ernie Els 4.30, 14 Jim Furyk 4.00, 15 Justin Rose 3.91, 16 Rory McIlroy 3.86, 17 Adam Scott 3.85, 18 Steve Stricker 3.69, 19 Stewart Cink 3.54, 20 KJ Choi 3.51

it must have said 14 on the back page of one of the tabloids.
Officially 16 in the world ranking today, better than McGinley ever achieved and only a few places off Darren Clarkes career best (10 i think?).

He walks like Monty though, he could do with sorting that out.
He could also do with a haircut!

You in Golf,

Wexford Golf Club Tuesday Mornin;

Hows the golf goin with you Locke these days?

McIlroy is going playing Harrington in a winner takes all $300k match at some golf club in Fermanagh. Should be decent spectacle.

Sorry Tiger, only seeing this now. Very bad but time is the major factor. Between work and home, I can’t justify going out at the weekend. Gave up my membership at the club I was joined. Just have to take it on the chin and play society golf for the next few years. Sucks but this is the world we live in now. I’d bet that I’m not alone…

Lads,

Anyone know a good place to buy 2nd hand golf clubs.

Looking for a set of irons. Budget would be €150 ish.

Thanks

Any golf shop Phil, they’re plentyful at this stage. And for your budget you’ll get a goodish set. Tell the salesperson your handicap and the amount of times you go out playing and they’ll sort you out. If you have a high handicap stay away from blades. Get a set with a bit of forgiveness in them. Or else try ebay, loads on there.

Thanks Locke,

I have being googling “golf shops Dublin” etc and I’m not getting too far. Obvisously I was on McGuirks web site but their prices are all in the 300 plus range.

Ideally I’d like to go into a shop and get a feel of the clubs rather than purchasing online/ebay,etc.

Irons with a bit of forgiveness sound good as at the minute I’d be around a 18-22 handicap as I’m only getting back into playing (don’t have an club official handicap yet).

Could you recommend a set/sets out there?

Go for something like Wilsons or MacGregors. I have MacGregors now for around 5 years now and never gave me a problem. Don’t go for Hippo or shat like that, not worth it. If you are a consistant 18-22 golfer you’ll want to come down at some stage and you’ll need a half decent set. I’m surprised at McGuirks, thought they might have something “out the back” for around the 150 mark. I know Nevada Bobs down here in Cork would have, though it’s been a while since I’ve darkened their door (see other post).

Ebay for me, though I’m sure there are others…

There’s a full set of Golf clubs for 150 in Elvery’s Phil.
They were wilson. Know they make tennis rackets so wouldn’t know if they’re good for golf clubs.

they are good enough for Paddy harrington Pikeman.

There are plenty of good forgiving sets out there.
Calloway X20 have a fat bounce/large cavity back and you won’t toe or shaft too many shots.
My advice would be to spend a couple of quid at the golf place out in airside in Swords where they will analyse your swing and give you a few different clubs to hit. It shows the distance they woudl travel, trajectory, cut/draw etc etc. Some clubs just don’t suit people and if you’ve already got a half decent swing then you might as well get clubs to suit it.
I’ve got a club for 400 and I’ve got a rescue club for 49 euro. both were the best when I tried them out.
Halpenny golf in Airside will let you take a few different clubs down to the place to check out which is best suited to you.

Played 9 holes last night. 9 tomorrow and 2 comps at the weekend.

Yours in small pale balls,
GSH.

You rubbinmynoseinit cunt GSH, green here…

How are you playing these days? Touch around the greens must be okay if your playing that amount.

Not playing too bad.
Came 3rd out of 106 last saturday in a foresomes. Lots of people detest the format but I think it’s great. I like sand and rough and have trees in my way.
I had 1 sandy and 2 up and downs last night but with the wind it was difficult to know whats what.
Now that winter is nearly over I’m going from my pinnacle gold (which I swear by in soft conditions) to the prov1.
Doing Metropolitan Cup practise at the moment, hence the muchos golf.
MRS.GSH away for the weekend so I have 36 holes booked and might get a couple more in.
Putting, chipping from 50feet are going well though. Happy enough with any putt inside 6 feet.
Yours in Golf and awaiting the TKFY2K+9 golf society startup,
GSH.

I checked it out there.

Well worth going to it. There is no substitute for seeing yourself forcing shots or swinging too fast etc.
They are 2 minutes away from Halpenny and those lads are very good to deal with.
Yours in trying to convince Ms.GSH thats its ok to say “stiffer shaft” if the subject is golf clubs,
