Good Books

Not fiction, but Bruce Springsteen autobio is good.

I have it, got a bit sick of it around 1980 and left it at that, but might finish it sometime
I’m kind of looking for easy fiction

The first thing is you need to find a reader who’s voice you like. Honestly, the plot is almost secondary.

Ordered this today

There was a risk that the story of this book might overwhelm the story in the book – its origin tale is quite something. It was written in a four-week fever immediately after Kristallnacht, the pogrom in November 1938 that signalled the lethal nature of the Nazi intent towards Jews. The author was a 23-year-old German Jew who had got out three years earlier, making his way to England via Sweden, France, Luxembourg and Belgium

Did ye hear mammy died isn’t fiction but a grand easy listen and very funny.

Not normally my kind of thing but I stuck with it, pure mindless old rubbish but interesting for the lockdown angle

The Darkness by Ragnar Jonasson. For more of a deeper/serious bit of fiction then The Abstainer by Ian McGuire.

Had started this a while back but only went back to it this week. A seriously interesting book.

Never read books anymore but I’m halfway through the fintan o toole history of Ireland since 1958 and it’s decent. He’s obviously not to everyone’s tastes but it’s an interesting analysis of class and society linked in with his own life and experiences. Good chapters so far on gay Byrne and the Christian brothers.

Did you know that you can return books to audible, it’s very easy to do and it doesn’t even matter if you finished listening to it.

Yes. Incredible service! I’d say they have to do it to compete with libraries etc.

They have added heaps of free books and podcasts recently in members section. Some v good stuff. Loads of good kids books in it

Return books for credit? Under what grounds?

Didn’t enjoy it, bought by accident etc etc. They don’t challenge it at all. Now maybe if you did it 50 times they might but assume they have some algorithm that just approves once your ratio of purchases to returns is OK

Have to do it on website. Can’t do it on the app I don’t think

You don’t even need to give a reason, just click and it’s done

I went to get Sapiens on audiobook format and it was looking for €35, what’s the story there?

Do you not get a credit every month?
Or you can buy 3 for €18

Or have you anything to return?

How does this work? Can I send it to you?
