Good Fillums

The Quiet Man was filmed in Mrs Barnes home village in Mayo. They are still milking the absolute bejaysis out of it 60 years later and fair play to them.

Watched Small Things Like These the other day. Dark, to say the least but brilliantly acted by Cillian Murphy and Emily Watson.

It won’t be everyone’s cup of tea but I thought it was very good.

I thought it was excellent too. Great performances all round. Eileen Walsh is great as Bill’s wife too. She gave a tour de france in Pure Mule 25 years ago.

They re doing a Danny Boyle special these last 2 nights on Film 4.

Watched Trainspotting last night and T2 tonight. First one is obviously a masterpiece, sharp dialogue, stunning soundtrack , funny as fuck and a pacy plot.

Really enjoying T2 this evening, which is better than I remembered it. Good sequel.

28 years later was slated by the Sunday independents film critic (Hilary White?). He gave it two stars out of five, said there was no tension/menace in it and they set up a plot right at the end for a sequel that was more or less preposterous. I was disappointed I was really looking forward to this. The producers also wouldn’t allow advance previews of the movie to critics until the day before its release which is usually a red flag.

Pity. 28 Days Later was a very unique looking film, a really good movie. Lovely balance between action and horror.

28 Weeks Later was only ok though. So the trajectory doesn’t look good

Is much of “Barry Lyndon” set in Ireland?

It seems to be divisive among fans but critic reviews have been really good. 78 on Metacritic is a very strong critical reception.

Will be seeing it tomorrow.

The first third of it.

That’s some claim to fame. One of the most beautifully shot films of all time. It made a big resurgence in popularity during lockdown for whatever reason.

Would you have spared Bullingdon in Barry’s shoes?

No.

I’ve heard good things about 28 Years Later. Depends how you react to the change of pace in the final third apparently.

I rewatched both Days and Weeks over the past few days. Days is obviously excellent but I was pleasantly surprised with Weeks, which while obviously a step down is a fine film in its own right. Great casts.

Some 28 Years Later thoughts:

The film is basically 4 sections. The first opening chunk is a very strong set-up built around some good old fashioned zombie movie tension and a Father-son dynamic and I’d imagine going in this section is what the movie going public would have expectedthe entire movie to be.

The second section moves away from the Father-son stuff and is basically more zombie survival stuff but less entertaining and with some half-assed comedic relief.

The third section is very weird and very philsophical with an emotional payoff that doesn’t reallly hit its mark.

The ending, which I had already read about, makes sense thematically but is also straight up batshit crazy and must be utterly baffling for non-British people. This should have been an after credits scene, even if it harkens back to the very first few minutes of the movie, as it works far more as a set up for future movies.

Basically the movie’s strengths are how it is shot, the performance of the lead, the opening hour, it’s unique vision of a post-world zombie apocalypse and I personally liked the soundtrack.

It suffers from a fractured second half with pacing issues and an ending that most people will find completely obscure. The movie’s trailers made it seem like it was a straghtforward movie in a way that it definitely isn’t.

In saying that, I like that you have Boyle/Garland out here making absolutely bizarre movies in 2025 and clearly not giving a fuck.

An impressive appendage according to Mrs Jones, I concurred

Sure you’d have to. Otherwise you’d give the impression of being an inadequate.

The first part of it. The second part is set on the continent, Prussia. The last part is set in England.

A good part of the film was filmed in Ireland. Obviously the Irish settings. The continental battle scenes were filmed in Ireland. A lot of the interior shots for Prussian part were filmed in Powerscourt and Dublin Castle.

I thought parts 1 & 4 looked glued onto a different film containing parts 2 & 3. Bizarre enough.
