Great Goalscorers

I am fascinated with goalscoring records. I think it is a very good indicator of the quality of a footballer. Here are a few that I have noted.

Ronaldo Luís Nazário de Lima (Brazil)

Cruzeiro (12 goals in 14 matches)
PSV (42 goals in 46 matches)
Barcelona (34 goals in 37 matches)
Inter (49 goals in 68 matches)
Real (83 goals in 127 matches)
Brazil (62 goals in 98 matches)

Gerhard “Gerd” Müller

1861 Nordlingen (51 goals in 31 matches)
Bayern Munich (398 goals in 453 matches)
West Germany (68 goals in 62 matches)

Ferenc Puskás

Budapest Honved (352 goals in 341 matches)
Real Madrid (156 goals in 180 matches)
Hungary (84 goals in 85 matches.

Of those I have seen, they are the most consistent across club and internationa football. Feel free to add.

A section of others:

  • Lionel Messi (223 goals in 253 matches for Barcelona)
  • Cristiano Ronaldo (154 goals in 144 matches for Real Madrid)
  • Imre Schlosser (258 goals in 155 matches for Ferencváros)

Clive Allen, Spurs. In the 1986–87 he scored 33 League goals, and 49 goals in all competitions.

His goal tally that season broke the Spurs club record held by Jimmy Greaves, and remains unbroken. No player associated with any top division club has managed to match or exceed Allen’s total of goals in all competitions since then, either.

Vieri was immense in the early 00’s.

Davor uker

Davor Suker was one of my boyhood idols. He wasn’t all that quick or silky a footballer and fairly one footed but by fuck was he a was some finisher and scored many excellent goals. 45 goals in 69 games for Croatia is some return at international level

A terrific international footballer but never really excelled at club level for me.

I still recall that chip over Schmeichel in Euro 1996.

Look at Fat Ronaldo’s record above. Holy fuck. I think the issue of the greatest player of our generation can be put to bed.

He had 4 or 5 excellent seasons in Spain where he was fairly prolific, won a Champions League with Madrid. He was the wrong side of 30 when he joined Arsenal and his powers were on the wain.

Mijatovic > Suker

Ian Rush.

I had it in my head that he was poor enough for Madrid. His record is pretty good though.

In terms of being a great goalscorer he most certainly was not. He probably was a more rounded footballer than Suker but Suker was a far more prolific goalscorer.

The great Dixie dean scored 60 goals in one season for Everton.a great goal scorer if ever there was one

brian clough had a ridiculous goal scoring ratio when he played in the North east…think his career was cut short by injury

“Come on, ref, he’s only codding…”

Mario Jardel - 130 goals in 125 matches for Porto

Not forgetting Batistuta.

“Not this lad. This lad doesn’t cod”

Gabriel Batistuta was another excellent goalscorer. Was ultra consistent for for the bones of a decade in Serie A with Fiorentian and in his first season with Roma before injuries took over.
