Harty Cup 2011

I see the forum creeps are out in force again over-analysing children’s games.

ASR 1-14 CBS 8 points half way through the second half

Finsihed 1-16 to 6 points to templemore
Conor Lehane supposedly went off with what looked a bad knee injury in the second half

thanks puke for the updates

only ballhopping about lehane, thought i would get a reaction
but the result is real
ASR won by 9 points

What time is the Harty Cup Final on next Sunday?

Charleville won the toss and electd to play with a stiff wind, doesn’t look good for them, 1-5 to a point down after 20 minutes, it will be a rout

1-11 to a point

Fucking hell. That’s some hiding. I heard Charleville weren’t really fancying their chances but I thought they’d make a game of it.

Bit like Caimins and Thurles in the final a couple of years ago

2-11 to 2 points at H/T

3-16 to 2 points, time nearly up

thats an awful beating, but it must be said that ard scoil are an exceptional side. its a pity that the flannans game was’nt the final.

all over, 3-19 to 3 points

congrats to ard scoil. they will take some stopping in the all ireland series

awul to see a schools team get a beating like that
ASR are very strong, did Charleville have any/many cork or limerick minors?

They’ll probably have on player on the panel this year in Pa O’Callaghan, have a few on the Cork U-16 panel last year. I’m guessing they are very young tbf.

Flannan’s finish with flourish

St Flannan’s (Ennis) 1-14 St Colman’s (Fermoy) 1-9
By Fintan O’Toole
Thursday, October 20, 2011
HE began the game on the bench but by the full-time whistle, Joseph Barry had made a defining contribution in tipping yesterday’s Dr Harty Cup Group C encounter in Charleville, in the direction of St Flannan’s.
The Clarecastle youngster got the vital touch to a Peter Duggan delivery in the 55th minute to strike the goal that propelled St Flannan’s into a four-point advantage and proved the key score in deciding this game.

A late free from the outstanding Tony Kelly rounded off a fine afternoon’s work for St Flannan’s as they maintained their unblemished record after two games in this group and ensured they have already booked their spot in the quarter-final stages after Christmas. For St Colman’s their Dr Harty Cup adventure has not yet concluded. But they face a critical final round match against Thurles CBS next month which they must now win to claim the second quarter-final spot on offer in the group.

In the early stages, the spoils of this match looked like being claimed by the Cork outfit. Backed by a strong wind, they settled best to the tricky underfoot conditions and rattled off 1-4 without reply in the opening eight minutes. Their hurling was crisp and sharp with Daniel Mangan setting the ball rolling with a pointed free before Kevin O’Neill, Anthony Spillane and Ronan Bransfield popped over fine points. The St Colman’s onslaught was completed when Noel McNamara raced through to billow the net in the eighth minute.

St Flannan’s were left reeling from that opening burst but last year’s semi-finalists made a pivotal positional alteration that helped get them back into contention. Tony Kelly, their marquee name following his exploits for the Clare minor and U21 hurling teams last summer, began the game at midfield yet was quickly withdrawn to centre-back to bed down the St Flannan’s challenge. He produced a marvellous defensive performance as he repelled several St Colman’s attacks and also weighed in with eight points from placed balls over the hour.

Allied to the vital contributions of Shane Kelleher, Jack Browne, Gearóid Ryan and Martin O’Leary, St Flannan’s came back into contention before half-time. Kelly hit four points while Cian Moloney and Peter Duggan grabbed one piece as St Flannan’s chipped away at St Colman’s advantage. Daniel Mangan rifled over two frees to give St Colman’s some breathing space and enable them to lead 1-7 to 0-6 at the interval.

The second half was a hard-fought affair as St Flannan’s, now backed by the elements, strove to peg St Colman’s back while the Fermoy school, powered by the Castlelyons defensive spine of Colm Barry and Colm Spillane, sought to protect their advantage. St Flannan’s were indebted to a sparkling save by Eibhear Quilligan when he tipped a McNamara drive over the bar in the 33rd minute and gradually they started to get on top, with the positioning of Peter Duggan at centre-forward paying a rich dividend as his impact grew.

St Flannan’s, who had to line out without Clare minor attacker Shane O’Donnell through injury, crept into the lead for the first time in the 49th minute through Conor Cleary but this was quickly cancelled out by Bransfield. Yet the Clare side finished stronger with 1-2 without reply in the last eight minutes to clinch victory.

Scorers for St Flannan’s: T Kelly 0-8 (0-7f, 0-1 65), J Barry 1-1, C Maloney, P Duggan, D Conroy, M McGuane (f), C Cleary 0-1 each.

Awesome Árdscoil always in control

Árdscoil Rís 1-17 Colåiste Chríost Rí 0-7
By Diarmuid O’Flynn
Thursday, October 20, 2011
A DOMINANT second-half in which they outscored their opponents by 10 points to two saw reigning champions Árdscoil Rís comfortably defeat Cork college Colåiste Chríost Rí in this second round Harty Cup game at chilly Mallow yesterday.
Árdscoil had also dominated the opening half — led at the break by double scores (1-7 to 0-5) but inaccuracy cost them dearly.

Chríost Rí began brightly with corner-forward Cian Walsh and sweet-striking wing-back Phillip Kelleher scoring from range. Sixmilebridge starlet Jamie Shanahan (member of the ‘Bridge side for this Sunday’s Clare SHC final) replied for the Limerick college.

But with Patrickswell star Kevin O’Brien beginning to show as a provider on the 40, Árdscoil hit their stride. O’Brien began the scoring with a fine point and then came the game’s only major — Lukas O’Brien latching on to a pass from his namesake to give Kevin O’Neill no chance in the Chríost Rí goal. That was in the 13th minute and from there, Árdscoil Rís never looked back.

A hat-trick from wing forward Jack Kelleher, along with a brace from midfielder Shanahan, saw them surge into a comfortable lead at the break and already the signs were ominous for ColĂĄiste ChrĂost RĂ.

Árdscoil should have been vulnerable having lost a host of starters from last season but they weren’t just bigger and stronger than Chríost Rí, they were also outstanding hurlers too — and in the second half especially, this showed.

A Ronan Lynch point signalled the start of a procession of scores. Jack Kelleher added another three points, Jamie Shanahan notched two more, Kevin O’Brien and wing-back Evan Fitzgerald had a point each, while towering substitute Michael Foley impressed.

They’re well-balanced, this new Árdscoil Rís side, tight at the back, well led in the centre by the powerful Barry O’Connell and he’s flanked by the Fitzgerald brothers, Evan and Stephen, fine stickmen both. Jamie Shanahan rules the roost in midfield, while up front, a plethora of dangerman, the two O’Briens and Jack Kelleher especially so.

ChrĂost RĂ lost little in defeat, however; smaller, lighter, outplayed in most sectors, they nevertheless kept hurling to the finish, wing-forwards Calum Crowe and David Scannell rewarded with a point apiece.

Scorers for Ardscoil Rís: J Kelleher 0-6, J Shanahan 0-5 (3fs), L O’Brien 1-0, K O’Brien, M Foley 0-2 each, E Fitzgerald, R Lynch, 0-1 each.

Scorers for ChrĂost RĂ: C Walsh, P Kelleher (1f, 1 65) 0-2 each, D Scannell, L Corry, C Crowe, 0-1 each.

ÁRDSCOIL RÍS: D Dempsey; R Kirby, PJ Hall, K McNamara; E Fitzgerald, B O’Connell, S Fitzgerald; J Shanahan, A Carroll; W O’Donoghue, R Lynch, J Kelleher; L O’Brien, K O’Brien, C Lynch.

Subs: M O’Loughlin for Lynch (45), M Foley for Carroll (47), C McCarthy for Shanahan (55), M Buckley for S Fitzgerald (55), D Poland for O’Donoghue (58).

COLÁISTE CHRÍOST RÍ: K O’Neill; C Horgan, TJ Murphy, J Ryan; P Kelleher, A Nolan, G Joyce; S Cronin, I Lucey; C Crowe, L Corry, D Scannell; C Walsh, E Dennehy, J Goode.

Subs: J Daly for Joyce (inj. 30), S Goggin for Corry (60), S Kearney for Walsh (60).

Referee: W Barrett (Tipperary).

Castletroy get off to a winning start

By Fintan O’Toole
Thursday, October 20, 2011
CASTLETROY College participated in the Dr Harty Cup for the first time yesterday afternoon and were left celebrating after an injury-time point by Ed Doyle secured a 1-14 to 2-10 victory over Kerry Colleges in their Group D clash in Feenagh.
And the result ensured Castletroy College qualified for the quarter-finals of this year’s competition as they claimed the second spot on offer in the three-team group after Nenagh CBS had defeated Kerry Colleges in the opening round.

“It’s a historic day for the school and we’re just delighted with this win,” said Castletroy College manager Liam O’Mahony. “It’s a mark of all the great work that has been done by the teachers in the school in promoting hurling in recent years and in the local clubs.”

Castletroy, who had full-forward Killian Enright in fantastic form as he struck 1-7, were ahead 0-10 to 0-5 at the interval, with Aidan Hanley in strong form in defence. They continued to dominate in the second half with Enright firing to the net, and both GearĂłid Hegarty and Andrew Latouche Cosgrave raising white flags to send them into a 1-13 to 0-8 lead.

But Kerry Colleges, inspired by Dougie Fitzelle, Daniel Collins, Ricky Heffernan and Cian Hussey, fought back to level before Doyle struck the winner.

In Group A, De La Salle (Waterford) grabbed their first victory of the campaign with a 0-19 to 0-11 success over Charleville CBS in Fermoy.

Darragh Flynn hit 0-9 for the winners, with Shane McNulty and Barry O’Sullivan notching 0-3 apiece, and they now face Coláiste Chríost Rí in a final group game that will decide who advances to the quarter-finals.

Last year’s finalists Charleville CBS, who had Pa O’Callaghan in brilliant form as he registered 0-9, are now out of contention.

In Group B, Midleton CBS booked their spot in the quarter-finals with a 2-15 to 1-11 success over Our Lady’s (Templemore) in Cahir. The east Cork school lead 2-7 to 0-7 at the break with Dillon Cahill and Patrick White firing their goals. Our Lady’s fought back in the second half with John and Brian McGrath, who struck 0-9 and 1-1 respectively, leading the way but Midleton CBS, inspired by Cahill who hit 1-9 in total, held on to triumph.

The meeting of ColĂĄiste na DĂ©ise and Our Lady’s will decide the last quarter-final spot after the Waterford side defeated St Caimin’s (Shannon) 2-25 to 0-6 in Golden yesterday. ColĂĄiste na DĂ©ise, were inspired by Cathal Curran and Tadhg Burke, with Alex Morey and Shane Gleeson best for a youthful St Caimin’s outfit.

Finally in Group C, Thurles CBS got their campaign back on track after an early defeat to St Flannan’s (Ennis) when they got the better of Blackwater CS by 0-14 to 0-11 in Clonmel.

Blackwater CS, who fielded Waterford minors Jamie Barron and Stephen Bennett, raced into an early 0-5 to 0-1 lead yet Thurles CBS fought back to trail 0-8 to 0-7 at the interval. The second half was tightly contested but Thurles CBS, inspired by scores from Stephen Cahill and Ciaran Quirke, hit the last three points of the game to seal their win.

They face St Colman’s in the final round of the group matches which will decide who advances to the last eight.
