The thing that one would grudgingly admire about Shefflin is that he really did make his own path in the game. He didn’t have much in the line of raw pace and didn’t seem to be as natural a stick man as Carey but seems to be a pretty clued in chap and had the wherewithal of mind and discipline to make himself be one of the greatest.
He is an example of what can be achieved with single mindedness and stubborn determination. A magnificent sportsman.
I’m not Kilkenny based but I was told by a Kilkenny hurler a few years ago that Shefflin was a cunt. A great hurler but an arrogant cunt was the exact phrase used.
This hurler is retired a few years now with all Ireland medals in his back pocket. He was stone cold sober at the time and didn’t fit the normal personality for KK hurlers in that he was interesting and funny.
