Stone cold sober at the time? Doubt it @the mixer walsh
Incorrect
I’m not Kilkenny based but I was told by a Kilkenny hurler a few years ago that Shefflin was a cunt. A great hurler but an arrogant cunt was the exact phrase used.
This hurler is retired a few years now with all Ireland medals in his back pocket. He was stone cold sober at the time and didn’t fit the normal personality for KK hurlers in that he was interesting and funny.
That dressing room division clearly had a hugely damaging effect on the success of the county side over an extended period of time.

John Tennyson?
Good to see you back
I didn’t call it division to be fair. Wouldn’t know if it was 1 persons opinion or that of a group.
Anyway, no right guesses and even if there were any I’m hardly going to say who it was.
I remember Kilkenny played Galway in Thurles in a knockout championship game one year - memory is going, may have been late 90’s or early 00’s - and Galway were well ahead. Carey dragged Kilkenny back into it with a truly phenomenal performance, one of the best I’ve ever seen in the flesh. He grabbed a couple of goals and won them the game almost on his own.
Very hard to compare the two. Carey carried a weaker Kilkenny team for a while but he was outrageously talented. Probably hurlings first real superstar as tv coverage and print media coverage of games intensified.
Shefflin was just an assassin, always seemed to do the right thing. Knew when to pass, knew when to go himself, great vision and the go to man when the chips were down.
Kilkenny fans don’t realise how lucky they have been.
Agree with all of this. Was at that game in thurles. I think it was 97 quarter final. Carey was unbelievable. Also remember a county final towards the end of his career where he took noel hickey to the cleaners scoring 3 goals off him in the process. 2 of the best performances I’ve ever seen. Shefflin was far more consistent than Carey but who knows what Carey would have achieve if he had the team around him that shefflin had. The majority of Carey’s career the Kilkenny team was pretty weak.
The more knowledgeable KK hurling supporters will tell you why DJ no longer even figures in the top 3 KK greats, not to mind comparing him to the greatest
Ya just imagine, he could have went on to do something completely unprecedented like win 10 senior All Ireland’s
@Mac will attest to both their abilities at hooking and backing no doubt. I may have gotten some part of that hurling idiom incorrect I’m afraid…
Is it a James Stephens player?
What about Tommy Walsh, 9 All Ireland’s at 31, he could have surpassed Henry if he was as greedy.
Aye and Tommy actually played in all of them and made important contributions to these games unlike that other foxy cunt.
Tommy was a savage hurler, KK’s best in the last decade for me. Never gave an inch to any man.
Walsh played on and made important contributions to 7 All-Ireland winning teams.
Yeah
Isn’t that what is said

Nine was what was said.
The foxy lad had ten medals
He could have been done without and not even missed for his last 3.
Tommy was a vital and relevant part of the team right up until his retirement.
If henry had fucked off at his peak he’d have more respect now. People saw right through the tokenism of keeping him on the bench and bringing him on when games were won for what it was, classic case of hanging around too long.
