Compared to who for instance? How many of the recent Kilkenny hurlers have come out gushing praise on any of their fellow team mates? This is not soccer or the self loving immortals that play soccer that we are talking about here. The begrudgers that have shown themselves up badly here in recent days have a notion that the stars of the unprecedented successful Kilkenny team of recent past should conform to some sort of soccer based personality when dealing with the media or other aspects of their public life. These KK fellas and their supporters are quite satisfied with their achievements and don’t require the adulation of no marks who give a cursory glance to a hurling match during half time in the Manchester Derby so as they can be “in” with the other goms on the internet when it comes to discussing a proper game.

If anything the fact that shefflin played on so long is counting against him. He was awesome circa 2000-2005.and then the four in a row of which he was the driving force . was it 2002 we gave tipp a trimming (which was a big deal back then) and if I recall shefflin turned eamonn Corcoran inside out. He had some phenomonal performances back then… it was so common though that it’s hard to pick any individual games out… He was that good all the time… Lads have very short memories and the fact that we were destroying most teams took the gloss off the fact that shefflin was the driving force behind it all…

2002 all Ireland semi is the best match I’ve attended. Two really good teams. Kelly and Shefflin at their peak. DJ’s class. Peter Barry outstanding. Tipp capitulated afterwards.

But you’d have admire the honesty that comes out. He knows he’s been fucking awesome and he’s not hiding behind the usual GAA shite of ah sure I got 2-11 but I was just in the right place at the right time kind of shit.

I don’t believe the thought process around the retirement though. I think that decision was made a long time ago. I find it bizarre that one of his first thoughts was to set about arranging a press conference to announce it.

I see where he’ll be writing a book. That could go either way. 1) He tells the truth about stuff and its mildly interesting or 2) He says nothing and just recounts the details of matches which would be the norm.

Listening to newstalk today one of the lads was saying they had interviewed him early in the year and when asked he said he didn’t know. Whoever it was said to him after, go on you must have known when I was talking to you a few months ago, Shefflin said actually at the time I was gearing myself up to go hard back at it.

Canice has worked with Arrigle in the past and who’s to say he won’t again. Kudos to Ger Gilroy for mentioning him during the Shefflin segment on Off The Ball on Wednesday night. Only right as the only one of the old guard left.
