Holidays or work? Would you recommend a couple of weeks there?
who?
Oooft headshot.
It was over 10 years ago, around the time some Aussie bird got the death penalty, it seems very far to go on a stand alone holiday, the Aussies treat it like we do the Spanish islands, I don’t surf but if you do it would help.
I’d prefer the islands off Thailand if you wanted to go a bit further afield, a few nights in Bangkok thrown in.
Go to Thailand FFS don’t mind that shithole
Really? Have you been to both or?
Went all around Thailand but know plenty of people been to Bali and said its a dirty shithole full to overflow with tourists and rip off merchants. Also be very careful not to be caught doing drugs in Bali.
Did you spend long in Thailand? Oh really? The shrooms In Thailand are meant to be off the scale.
A few weeks, its great. And there is more to it than the sleazy stuff. You can beat away down to the islands off the southern coast for another side of Thailand. Unreal and cheap as chips down there. If you want the women just go to Bangkok. Great nightlife in Bangkok but nothing of note to see during the day IMO.
I was told Bangkok is a hell hole only for the whores. Did you travel alone?
No I wasn’t alone. Yeah its grubby enough there - pollution on the streets, open sewers, rats scurrying about etc. We quickly realised there was nothing there but the nightlife and moved on. Chiang Mai up north is fabulous. @RaymondCrotty is there at the moment we learned on another thread. Personally I love Thai food and the weather is great plus everything is cheap out. If I was to go back I’d go straight to the islands but for a first timer I would recommend Chiang Mai. I’m certainly glad I visited it if only once.
Thanks smark. Are you heading Galway?
No I hate the galway races on every level.
It’s too young.
I’d agree with most of what you say, the problem is that in a limited time you’ll struggle to do the North and South of Thailand. The North (Chang Mai/Rai) is amazing but really more for the backpacker than the holiday maker, the islands are great for a holiday, Thai food is unreal, I’m just as we speak putting the finishing touches on a green beef curry, Bangkok has its downsides but it’s a great place to eat and our friend @anon32894817 is the right age to give a few days of his life away to the Koh San Road and surrounding area.
I couldn’t find decent food in Bangkok and I did try. What I found was (around Sukhumvit anyway) it was all overpriced slop aimed at tourists. The food in Chiang Mai though, everywhere we went, was unreal. Brilliant food on the islands too.
I heard New Orleans and Louisiana are top spots for the lone traveller. It’s a spot of love to visit after I get through college.
Agreed on the grub up north, the night market in Chang Mai (possibly Chang rai) was incredible, in Bangkok I ate on the street mostly, went up around Chinatown for the seriously fucked up stuff. I found a fella close to the Koh San who made the ultimate Tom Yum soup, one night we went to a nice hotel near Pat Pong and had some unbelievable grub, at the time Thai Food wasn’t huge in Ireland and the few places weren’t great, a real eye opener for me.
@anon32894817 if you’re still following this, the more I think about the North of Thailand the more I think it could be a decent Lone experience, those treks into the mountains are brilliant ( probably twee by Thai standards and very inauthentic) but great fun and you’ll meet loads of people, me and the wife are still in touch with some English and Canadiand we met on our 5 day trek.
Thanks lads.
Don’t do a @ChocolateMice on us now and head off to Ballyheigue.
