Holidays in Ireland thread (Laois is for prisoners)

Kilkee? I never understood the attraction.

Phil is a Spanish Point devotee iirc

That’s alright then.

I see where you’re going there you sly dog. :pint:

I understand half the fun is the places you stop off in and bars you visit along the way. This is obviously not an option if we’re still in lockdown.

I’m looking ahead to a level 3 summer. 105 minutes and a substantial meal in Banagher etc

I’d say those Midlands towns like Tullamore, Banagher, Mountmellick and maybe even Borrisokane would be a bit of craic to pass a midweek afternoon sipping pints and backing horses.

There’s a pub in Borrisokane called the yank or something and it does unreal grub. Proper roaster fare. In a previous life I was on the road a bit and if I was ever anywhere near the place I’d call in.

There’s hidden gems in all these places.

I loved driving around the place stopping in random spots like that. It’d only be maybe once a week though. I wouldn’t like to do it every day

You’d need to hire a driver for that

I reckon a mini bus around shitty small towns and villages ating pints would be a great day out. Always my favourite part of a stag stopping in random shit holes on the way

I have fond memories stopping in Freshford on the way to Kilkenny one bleak, January Saturday a few years ago.

We put down a great few hours in both Ballyragget and Durrow on different jaunts to KK. We stopped in an unreal pub by the river in durrow, had a bike museum or something attached, but the beer garden was over looking the river. Heaven.
The place in ballyragget was an absolute kip, and the locals were snorting to bate the band but we had some craic with them

Durrow is a nice spot.

I have a lovely little tradition of meeting some of my cousins in the castle there for lunch one of the Saturdays before Christmas.

I love going off the motorway to pass through these places like Urlingford, Johnstown, Cullohill and Abbeyleix. These places have a bit of heritage about them.

Bobs bar. Shane Lowry frequents there regularly.

A noble spot

Durrow might be Laois’s one redeeming feature

Was on a stag in Carlingford and we rented a bus to zip into towns either side of the border. Upon hearing the route, the driver refused leading to a long stand off. Eventually had a lovely spin around bandit country and picked up a load of random loud Rastooler stragglers which had the driver sweating buckets.
