Holidays in Ireland thread (Laois is for prisoners)

Due to a wedding in the area, we are heading to Fermanagh for a few days. I’ve never been in the county to my knowledge, an honour it shares with Tyrone.

Anyway, is there anything to do up there? Will have kids with us. We will be in Enniskillen but will travel around a bit

Weather is given shite enough for the few days.

Stairway to heaven boardwalk
Marble Arch caves

Both close to each other

The only county I’ve never been in either.

Smashing countryside up there.

Do kids like caves?

I know we used to always be brought to caves on school tours, but we were simple folk

You could meet Boxty in Mullan Market selling old cassette tapes of Margo/Daniel/Big Tom.He also sells heating oil in 5 gallon drums and green/red diesel.
You could call into Nevins Bistro when you pass through Blacklion.
You could also visit Boa Island, but don’t let the name put you off,it’s not really an island.
You could also pop into McCaffreys quarry and see where the tumbling Paddy’s used to work.

More importantly how was the Curragower

I’ve told herself to travel light, we are coming home with the boot full.

It was good mate. The beef box was grand. Decent feed in it. My pal went for the chicken box. Had a table by window so a few pints there and then into JJ Bowles and Treaty for a few more.

The last time I had it I found it a bit dry tbf.I was there a couple of Sundays ago.Its a nice spot, the food is ok.Fairly big portions tbf.

The wings are class. Best I’ve had in Limerick.

Much happening in Treaty?

The wings in the Ho are very good too

I was going to go directly for the wings but the post from @Julio_Geordio or someone else yesterday mentioned the beef box. As I said, years since I was in there but I would never have considered it a top spot for grub. Always decent but not much more than that.

Treaty was tipping away for a Monday night. More in there than Bowles. I was home by 10pm I’d say (was out since 5 I suppose).

They do, until they realise half way through they need the toilet, the only way out is with the guide and he has another 30 minutes of his routine to go - gets a bit stressful then.
The caves are generally the driest part of Fermanagh, you may as well pack the rain gear, adjust the pace of life and make the most of the scenery.

I missed this Pirlo. Sligo is a savage spot for my money. I spend a week or 2 there every year. No idea if its still on the agenda but if it is…
Climb knocknarea from the strandhill side. Savage walk and will put you in the mood for some wrll earned pints/grub. Or you can drive to the car park up the back and walk up the easy way. About 30mins to get up there. Views are spectacular if the fog isnt in.
Seaweed baths in strandhill. The missus will love it, especially if she is camping. They do normal rooms or you can splash out for their luxury room and a balcony looking out over the sea.
Surf lesson. 2 surf schools there i think.
Grub. The shells place is high quality fare. As is the place honestly farm, just back the road a bit.
Cycle, great cycling from strandhill to town and on out to rosses point the other side of the bay. That would be a decent cycle maybe an hour. There’s a lovely sauna at rosses point dug into the rocks at the point of it. The sea is your cold dip. The restaurant beside it, fish and bean is fantastic but pricey. We had a sauna, pints and oysters in the blistering sunshine there last year.
There’s a fair bit of other cool shit around sligo so let me know if you end up going and ill send on more.

Going to Waterford city Friday for an overnight stay. Had a google, but didn’t see a whole pile to do in the town. Two of us in our sixties so a slow pace kinda stuff , sightseeing , short walks etc. Taking the train for the craic and leaving the car at home.Any suggestions.

@Fagan_ODowd is the only one with great suggestions here I’d imagine.

in typical @Fagan_ODowd fashion, I’d be saying that there is more to do outside the city than in it, but without your own travel, it would make it more difficult. They still have a Waterford crystal visitor centre, absolute full of yanks, but might be worth a look. The Viking Triangle / Reginalds Tower area not far from the Waterford crystal is best place for museums and historic things. There is a walking tour from there, Viking experience thing, Medieval museum and Bishops Palace museum is also around there too. That end of town is probably best for a tourist set up, so a bit of a walk from the train station on the other side of the bridge. Or there is the greenway there too near the bridge if you fancy a cycle.

Bar that though, I dont know of much else use from a tourist perspective in the town. Some decent restaurants there. If you could get out to the coast you’d have nice scenic areas and walks.

Some grand little museums in the town. Museum of time, Reginald’s Tower, Viking Museum always worth a visit. Waterford Crystal is a good place to visit. If you are down in that part of town drop down to Rody Keigherys auction house and buy some vintage Waterford glass. Push on to the Peoples Park which has a lovely coffee shop.
There is a fella called Jack Burchill who does walking tours of the city. I know people who have done these and they highly recommend him. They’d be old timers like yourself. He is on facebook I think.

You can walk out the greenway from the town now, along the quays.

The Book Centre is the best bookshop in the country and has a nice cafe
