Holidays in Ireland thread (Laois is for prisoners)

What you mean? The landlord cancelling you late on? Can that happen? Or you mean the holiday maker cancelling late on? I’ve a place booked already for a week next summer but we can cancel up to one week before for free. Very awkward for the landlord to be fair if it happens.

Yes it can. Happened to us a couple of times going racing or to games in the UK. Booked long way out and they obviously thought could have got more money late on.

There is a penalty for the host but might be worth it for them still. Most hosts are genuine and won’t do it tbf. I always look for hosts with large numbers of good reviews

We’ve had similar experiences, I know there’s a backlash towards Airbnb but we’ve had generally brilliant experiences all over Ireland and Europe

I think the fact you rarely need to meet the host now is a big bonus (for me anyway)

Twas about a grand for three nights. On the saucy side alright but it’s a lodge so handy with the family can cook your own dinner for the kids etc. while having use of the hotel facilities. No point in going to a hotel and the kids going to bed and then you’ve to go to bed yourself basically.

We would use Airbnb a good bit since the kids arrived. I’ve had no major issues with it. But it’s not cheap anymore. This bollox with cleaning fees and booking fees etc etc
Works well if you can get a few families into a house and split the cost.

It’s fairly marginal to a hotel room a lot of the time now. If I hadn’t the kids I’d be going for a hotel all day

Fair enough but what can you do about that :man_shrugging:
Besides the breakfast hotels are a shit show for a family of 6

Agreed. Shit show with any kids full stop really.

I’d disagree on that - I’ve been booking 5 star review places “superhost” houses with 3-4 bedrooms in good tourist spots in height of summer and always within walking distance of some few pubs or shops and always for in and around €200 per night. Would you get much of a hotel for €200 per night for a family of four? All cramped into one room with no cooking facilities and going to bed at the same time. If my wife and I stayed in the same room as the kids then no one would sleep all night. Last year we were in Kerry and before that West Cork and both times they’d cleaning fees attached but actually next summer’s place has no cleaning fee attached so that’s probably €150 of a saving straight away.

Beef and cider…

The Failte Ireland spokesperson was having to do some serious ducking and diving of questions yesterday evening on the launch of their new short break in Ireland campaign. She eventually slipped up when Matt said surely they get feedback in surveys that Ireland is too expensive for a short break. She said that wasn’t true, in fact 54% of Irish people who holiday in Ireland are satisfied or very satisfied with the value for money. It’s closer to 70% for overseas visitors.

So basically half of Irish people think there’s no value in holiday at home, and 30% of foreign visitors leave thinking it wasn’t worth the money.

Yep heard that interview, and she was pretty unimpressive all told. Outlining how Failte Ireland are issuing renewable energy information and methods to minimize food waste with hoteliers to keep their overheads down which will be passed on to the consumer, they will in their shite.
