The second half v Tipp in 19 is a prime example. Granted they were down a man but that happened just before HT, giving them at least a chance to reorganise (see Wexford 1996). There was no fucking plan B at all. They just lumped ball after ball in and Cathal Barrett was happy to oblige and bring it back out.
Iād say Nero fiddling while a sub was taking them for 7 points from play would be a criticism too.
That too, but at that stage they were trying to put out too many fires. They did not have defenders with pace to bring on.
Theyād be Joe McDonagh level without him
KK were brain dead yesterday. Every single puckout landed in the same place and Cork just crowded them out of it. Iād love love see the puckout stats for the second half Iād say they won fuck all.
TJ Reid was deployed as a dogs body out around the middle. Tackling and scrapping and popping passes to other players to take shots. When surely if you have one of the best forwards in the game he should be the one on the end of the moves.
He drifted in and got ball around full forward three times in the game. Once for that possible penalty/overcarrying, once where he caught a beauty over Downey and setup someone else Cody?? for a goal chance and then once at the end when it was a bit of a scramble. Basically they nearly got two goals out of three balls he got.
Lads are praising Downey and he managed to survive and maybe even excel in the third quarter.
But for 45 or so mins he was roasted red raw by anyone who went near him. Billy Ryan looked like the second coming of Henry Shefflin for a while. How Cody didnāt put TJ in on top of him Iāll never know.
Codyās tactics are definitely holding KK back at this stage. But his man management or whatever you want to call it remains second to none. That is one average group of players and he is getting almost as much as he can from them, but if he could add a selector/coach with a bit of guile about him it would be huge.
That said in the overall scheme of things, I donāt think any ticket without Cody could get the same from them.
At the end of normal time right at the whistle there was a very clear foul on the Kilkenny back (Walsh?) Around the lhf/midfield area. He looked at it but bottled it and blew for the draw. Blatant. They were that close to being in an all Ireland final.
Just had a look at the underage titles there in recent years.
The Limerick surge does not seem to have been backed by too many underage successes.
2 U21 titles and 0 minors in the past 10 years.
I noticed Galway have done 4IAR at minor level. They should soon be reaping the rewards of that, no?
Minor hurling wins is never really a good barometer of Senior success in hurling. Have a look at the U20/21 roll of honour.
Galway havenāt won in that grade since 2011, Kilkenny since 2008.
Fair point but those Limerick teams contained generational type talent. This combined with excellent coaching, management etc., has allowed that talent to thrive.
Maybe not but you could look at Kerry who did 5IAR at minor level but havenāt won one at u20/21 since 2008. Now Iād say had the rules not changed and Clifford and OāShea being available for some of those seasons they would have won one at least.
Not all successes, but Limerick have contested 7 of the last 8 Munster Minor finals, winning 4. Go back 20 years and we would have been routinely getting hockeyed at the grade.
However the current senior team is essentially the U21 winners of 2015 & 2017.
When we had underage success in 2000-2002 it went to our heads and we never capitalised on it. One AI final appearance was all we got from those teams. Now if we can get a few lads each year from the minor teams and into the system we are happy.
And money
Limerick went from 1984 to 2013 without winning a Munster minor title (5 counties). Then won two-in-a-row which is backboning the current senior team.
Lost one of those AI semi finals to Galway after extra time, lost the final the next year to Kilkenny. The players were coming through, even if the AI minor titles didnāt materialise.
If they had those two plus the lad who went to Australia, it is fair to assume they would have won multiple all irelands at the u20 level. Those three are generational talent that are match winners in their own right but makes those around them better.
Of course, success is multi faceted, money is a component but not the most important one imho.
Its not the most important, but try do anything without it in the modern climate and see how far you go.
I agree. But it can be easiest to acquire.
Depends on the scenario too. If youāre wasting time going around gathering it up, it takes resources and man hours too.
Its a great help when you have a money tree.
A lot goes back to a county board that lacks a vision/expertise in this area.
Some county boards could not organise a raffle.
