what makes you think he would be anywhere near good enough for this?
laughable ,absolutely laughable
Punters in the NFL are a joke. When they e.g. punt from the halfway line they very rarely put the ball out of bounds within the 10.
Scifres from San Diego did this a few times in the playoff game against Indy there a few weeks back and he was treated like a god. Now he put on a good show of kicking but this should be the norm and not the exception and in my opinion O’Gara being one of the most accurate tactical kickers in the history of rugby could certainly do this as could other elite rugby outhalves like Carter, a heathy Wilkinson etc…
So he could certainly be a punter.
Kicker would be a bigger ask but it’s doable.

not a chance- american football is way more popular than idiotball & there are a fuckload more players playing - what makes you think this scrawny muldoon who plays a minority sport & is just about above international average in this minority sport could usurp people one of the 24 or whatever NFL punters playing the game & practicisng all his life
Eric Miller got trialed with Dublin footballers did he not?
I don’t think it was as trial as such that Miller got Dan…only in name…because he wasn’t getting his game for his club at the time …I don’t honestly know how it came about…From my experience lads who go playing rugby always come back to gaa like blocks…they lose their ability to turn fast and seem only to be able to sprint in a straight lines…they defo gain strength but at a cost to their mobility…I don’t think you can say one sport is easier to adapt to than the other as a lot depends on the individual and what position he’s playing…also in rugby when you have the ball you are trained to always be anticpating and preparing for the tackle and shape your body accordingly whereas in gaelic football you’re not …
32 teams. So about 64 punters? 2 a team? Dunno, not sure…
The other night the Cardinals were playing the Eagles.
Two punters. Before you click the link can you tell me what their nationalities are? By your reasoning they are American and have played NFL since childhood. They are both from the same country…
As I have already highlighted, in my opinion, punters in the NFL are poor kickers when compared to kickers in rugby.
Punters in the NFL on a smaller pitch than rugby cannot find the corners. A punter’s main job in NFL is to kick whereas in rugby it is only an aspect of outhalves job.
If O’Gara got to focus only on kicking for corners, something which I think O’Gara is particularly good at when he is on his game, I think he could be an elite punter in the NFL.
I agree with you, I was humoring MGG earlier abut her and TOl, didnt want to shoot her dream down completely. it got legs and people were getting cranky so i kept at it.
id say ROG would have no more interest in playing football with Cork than the man in the moon, ditto TOL, why the fook would they.

I’d imagine an amercan football is a lot harder to kick as there’s far less air in it and a lot harder leather as well…also is accuracy not sacrificed for height when punting to opposition as the punter 's main objective is to give his team mates time to get downfield to tackle the receiver regardless of where on a certain line he is tackled, be it the left corner, middle or right corner as the first down will start in the middle anyway…
this thread is really spiriling away from the main point alright!
My tuppence on punters, there is one per team cluinduic. and they are traded around like mad. Ben Graham of the Cardinals is kicking for his third team this season! Rocca and Graham are the only 2 from another sport to change over and make it.
If it was as easy as turning up and either place kicking, or punting, surely there would have been a shitload of AFL or rugby players already in the leagues, or at least in NCAA.
The ball is a good bit smaller and a very different shape to rugby ball, and the kicking technique is much different as well. I’m sure rugby players could easily adapt to it tho, but if they could, then why hasnt there been any of them taken up in what is a very lucrative market in NFL?

AFL ball is closer to a NFL ball than a Idiotball ball - AFL as a game has a lot more kicking than idiotball -
O gara isnt even a top rugby player yet you think he could make it in a popular sport
its not the same as an ageing footballer going to quatar - laughable stuff to think that an idiotballer could make it in a proper sport when he retires

Uh dunno, maybe in O’Leary’s case because he excelled at it, was brought up with it, cos it’s a beautiful game, an opportuinity to play sport for his home rather than his employer?
I’m sure TOL wouldnt mind the opportunity, but he wont be capable of getting back the skill he had as an 18 yo when he is 31. He might get away with a bit of Club hurling, but nothing else imo. Even as a decent minor he wouldnt have been guaranteed making it as a senior hurler.
No, no problem with Munster Rugby, I’ve a lot of respect for the Munster team.
I was pointing out some reasons why O’Leary might want to play hurling in response to Dan’s question. I think there is a difference between representing your parish/county and playing rugby for Munster… closer community ties
