Humphries on the Cork saga

I wouldnt be in glee at all caomhaoin, and whilst I cant say I’m overly disappointed, I think its more to do with the fact that the players, maybe outside of Cork only, are an unlikeable bunch. It was mentioned here in another thread, or maybe at the start of this one, but the ‘characters’ on their team are generally unlikeable and not the kind where you’d like to see them do well. The likes of Gardiner, Oige, Niall McCarthy, and others I’d never have been fond of. I know every county has players like that, but this current Cork team seemed to have more of them.

But what got me was that their players where I would have had a lot of time for and respected, The O’Connors, Sean Og, joe Deane, etc, are now coming out and making absolute donkeys of themselves.

Bandage mentioned it above about the rest of the country being apathetic about the Cork team being there this year. This time last year I was hoping above everything that things would be fixed, but this year I couldnt give a toss. Fook them really. They are making a huge issue over something they shouldnt be.

So in that sense, I’d nearly like to see Cork do well this year with effectively a B side and show it as a 2 fingers to last years panel. Dont know if that will happen, but I’m sure the players and management will have a lot more drive in them this year than they ever had.

its best have 15 players who give everything they can on the field, than 15 primadonnas who think they are above reproach.
They saved 12k over a period of 4 weeks in expenses, that’s 3k a week x how many nights do they train? say 2, we know it’s more that’s 1500.00 a night divided by a panel of 30 players, manager, selectors, physios, kit man etc. say even just the 30 panel members 1500/30 = 50 per player.
On the milage alone Brian Dooher and Stephen O’Neill has a 50 mile round trip, the 2 Cavanaghs have a 70 mile round trip, likewise the McGuigans. Although they don’t get Civil Service milage allowances, i’m sure that 50c a mile they do get would make up over half that 1500. Then you have post training meals etc., real professional pay for play there:rolleyes:
20 players
1 night a week over 2 weeks as xmas off
12k
600 each for training to play the game they love - not the wages of real sportsmen but not amateur - throw in the free holidays -the jobs where they do nothing- the massive other expenses - the meals etc - the dogfighting rings -they would all be on 1500GBP a month

I agree with you, they have to get on with it, simple as that. Don’t know why you wouldn’t like Niall Mac, but the rest i understand.
Problem is Mac this isn’t a “B” team, if it was i would see us winning half our league games and having a right go at winning a game in championship. Thats not being cocky, thats the reality, we do have excellent young hurlers. But this is a “C” or even “D” team, many of these guys wouldn’t make the Cork Intermediate panel normally. They played WIT last week in the Waterford League, i’d say only 7 or 8 of the Cork team would make the WIT team, at a stretch. Thats how bad it is. No offence to WIT, who are a top side, but i’m sure you know where i’m trying to get at.

Where are you going with these figures, every Intercounty panel has a minimum of 30 in training with a panel of 25 on a match day.
2-in-a-row here we go.

injuries, work commitments ,natural wastage, dog fighhting tournaments all drastically reduce Decembers training numbers

the jobs where they do nothing- the massive other expenses - the meals etc - the dogfighting rings -they would all be on 1500GBP a month

They now have work commitments in the jobs where they do nothing?

clock in,clock out, meet a few muldoons & talk shit for a while etc etc - not great value to what they do but they have to keep the commitent up or the pretence that they amateur is blown out of the water

even the most loyal GGA fam can admit its a grey area to say the least - Masive expenses- cushy job from the sponsor- lucrative grant from FF(another one in the holy trinity of evil) - not 100% amateur & thats just the players
the concert promoters etc are far from amateur too

They’re not all Civil Servants.

exactly , they have cushy numbers & only serve themselves & not the people like civil servants do

Nice wumming. You would have had lads frothing at the mouth with this kind of stuff over on AFR back a while ago. Or maybe you already did…

So all the Dublin Hurlers and Footballers work in Arnotts?

Like the church & FF ,im not surprised at your double standard & gombeenism - someone said the GGA was an amateur organisation when in fact the only thing amateur about it is that the players dont get paid but when you scratch the surface like FF & the church its all smoke & mirrors & a nod & a wink when it comes to players getting paid

wumming? Im sick of GGA fans saying the GGA is an amateur organisation & ill explain why its not time after time after time

You’ve explained nothing, just cause you say it’s so don’t make it so.
GAA players are amateur, they do not get paid a wage for playing Gaelic Games. This is fact.

To be honest, I’m a GAA man myself but there’s definitely an undercurrent of truth in a lot of what you’re saying and an awful lot of criticisms you have of the GAA are valid.
However, the hyperbole and references to dog fighting etc etc adds a bit of ‘humour’ to your posts but also points them up as wumming to anyone with a brain.
Maybe if you played it completely straight, didn’t exaggerate things and left out the babyish attempts at insulting people, fellas might find your arguments a bit more credible?

blow me

Ahh poor Ncc, your gut at you again?

GAA players get grants. Amateur boxers in the Olympics eg Kenny Egan etc also get grants. Does not change their amateur status.
You’re wrong on this one. Leave it aside and stick to some of your more valid criticisms.

are you coming out? a bit late now, with the sprog and all
